Context of 2 Samuel 13:3
1It happened afterwards that Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister whose name was Tamar, and Amnon [her half brother] the son of David was in love with her. 2Amnon was so frustrated because of his [half-] sister Tamar that he made himself sick, for she was a virgin, and Amnon thought it impossible for him to do anything to her. But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David’s brother; and Jonadab was a very shrewd (cunning) man. 4He said to Amnon, “Why are you, the king’s son, so depressed morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” And Amnon said to him, “I am in love with Tamar, my [half-] brother Absalom’s sister.” 5Jonadab said to him, “Go to bed and pretend you are sick; and when your father [David] comes to see you, say to him, ‘Just let my sister Tamar come and serve me food, and let her prepare it in my sight, so that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’ ”

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 13:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3Jonadab was a very subtle man - And most diabolic advice did he give to his cousin. We talk of the simplicity and excellence of primitive times! "Say not thou what is the cause that the former days were better than these." Take them altogether, we may thank God that they are past, and pray him that they may never return.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3Shimeah - Called Shamma (marginal reference), was Jesse‘s third son. Subtil - literally, wise. The word is generally used in a good sense, but here, and in Job 5:13, it means crafty.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3shrewd (literally wise): Jonadab's "wisdom" was similar to the serpent's cleverness (Genesis 3:1). In the context of a royal court, the Hebrew term for friend is closer to “counselor” or “adviser.”Read the comment
