Context of 2 Kings 14:5
3He did right in the sight of the Lord, though not like David his father (ancestor). He acted in accordance with everything that his father Joash had done. 4However, the high places were not removed; the people were still sacrificing and burning incense on the high places. As soon as the kingdom was firmly in Amaziah’s hand, he executed his servants who had killed his father the king. 6But he did not put the sons of the murderers to death, in compliance with what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, in which the Lord commanded, saying, “The fathers shall not be put to death for the sons, nor shall the sons be put to death for the fathers; but each shall be put to death [only] for his own sin.” 7Amaziah killed 10,000 [men] of Edom in the Valley of Salt, and took Sela (rock) by war, and renamed it Joktheel, to this day.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 14:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5As soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand - No doubt those wicked men, Jozachar and Jehozabad, who murdered his father, had considerable power and influence; and therefore he found it dangerous to bring them to justice, till he was assured of the loyalty of his other officers: when this was clear, he called them to account, and put them to death.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5The phrase, “confirmed in his hand” 2 Kings 15:19, usually expresses the authorisation of a new reign by an imperial superior (see 2 Kings 15:19 note); but here it describes the result when the troubles consequent upon the murder of Joash had passed away. The new king‘s authority was generally recognized by his subjects.Read the comment

He put the killers to death but did not kill their children.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-62Ki 14:1-6. Amaziah's Good Reign over Judah. 3-6. He did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, yet not like David his father--The beginning of his reign was excellent, for he acted the part of a constitutional king, according to the law of God, yet not with perfect sincerity of heart (compare 2Ch 25:2). As in the case of his father Joash, the early promise was belied by the devious course he personally followed in later life (see 2Ch 20:14), as…Read the comment
