It is now three months since we left Melbourne. We have traveled about twenty-five hundred miles by sea and by land, and I have written over three hundred pages of letter paper. I have spoken to the people forty-one times, and am gaining in health, and strength, for which I render thanksgiving and praise to God every day, and in the night season. “Blessed be the Lord, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications. The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him. The Lord is their strength, and he is the saving strength of his anointed.” [Psalm 28:6-8.] “I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” [Psalm 34:1-4.] I know not how to be thankful enough for the goodness and mercy of God to me. I desire to devote myself, soul, body, and spirit to His service.Psalms 34:1-5

“I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord; the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.” This will be the evidence given. Those who claim to be Christians will receive no harm from the atmosphere of unbelievers. “O magnify the Lord with me; and let us exalt his name together. ... They looked unto him, and were lightened, and their faces were not ashamed.” [Psalm 34:1-3, 5.] All who have this experience can safely carry their religion wherever they go. The Lord can say to them, “Go, and I will go with thee.” All their talents, all their faculties, will be employed in doing good and honoring God. They will declare the excellencies they possess in the righteousness of Christ. All who observe their deportment will be convinced that they look upon goodness, wisdom, and holiness as the most precious treasures they can possess.Manuscript Releases, vol. 10 [Nos. 771-850]

Those who have subdued, contrite hearts are tenderly regarded by the Lord. “For thus saith the high and lofty One, that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] Thank the Lord! I praise His name that He does not judge unrighteously. “His mercy is on them that fear Him from generation to generation. He hath showed strength with His arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich hath He sent empty away.” [Luke 1:50-53.] Read also every verse of the 32nd and 34th Psalms, for they both contain important lessons.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

“Come, ye children, hearken unto me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry. The face of the Lord is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth him out of them all. He keepeth all his bones; not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked; and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants; and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.” [Psalm 34:1-22.] “My tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long.” [Psalm 35:28.]Psalms 34:2

Give your whole heart and life to the service of Him who gave Himself for your redemption. Disappoint the enemy. Refuse to be his tool for the carrying out of his plans. Turn away from the financial advantages which he offers you and which, if accepted, would prove to be a curse to your religious experience. Then you can say in the cleanness of your heart, “My soul shall make her boast in the Lord.” [Psalm 34:2.] Let there be in your lives no deceitful devising, no artifice, no underhand schemes and contrivings. Depart from all that you would condemn in others.Psalms 34:3

“The Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.” James 5:11. He waits with unwearied love to hear the confessions of the wayward and to accept their penitence. He watches for some return of gratitude from us, as the mother watches for the smile of recognition from her beloved child. He would have us understand how earnestly and tenderly His heart yearns over us. He invites us to take our trials to His sympathy, our sorrows to His love, our wounds to His healing, our weakness to His strength, our emptiness to His fullness. Never has one been disappointed who came unto Him. “They looked unto Him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.” Psalm 34:5.Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing

According to the 1860 census, the only “Manchester” family in Battle Creek was that of Elias C. Manchester, a prosperous merchant. The property on which the Whites built their house in 1856 had earlier belonged to E. C. Manchester, who sold it in 1855 to Cyrenius Smith, who, in turn, sold it to James White in 1856.

Its Stories Bring Assurance to the Timid Child—Only the sense of God’s presence can banish the fear that, for the timid child, would make life a burden. Let him fix in his memory the promise, “The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.” Psalm 34:7. Let him read that wonderful story of Elisha in the mountain city, and, between him and the hosts of armed foemen, a mighty encircling band of heavenly angels. Let him read how to Peter, in prison and condemned to death, God’s angel appeared; how, past the armed guards, the massive doors and great iron gateway with their bolts and bars, the angel led God’s servant forth in safety. Let him read of that scene on the sea, when to the tempest-tossed soldiers and seamen, worn with labor and watching and long fasting, Paul the prisoner, on his way to trial and execution, spoke those grand words of courage and hope: “Be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you.... For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.” In the faith of this promise Paul assured his companions, “There shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.” So it came to pass. Because there was in that ship one man through whom God could work, the whole shipload of heathen soldiers and sailors was preserved. “They escaped all safe to land.” Acts 27:22-24, 34, 44.Prayer

Though the rulers of this world know it not, yet often in their councils angels have been spokesmen. Human eyes have looked upon them; human ears have listened to their appeals; human lips have opposed their suggestions and ridiculed their counsels; human hands have met them with insult and abuse. In the council hall and the court of justice these heavenly messengers have shown an intimate acquaintance with human history; they have proved themselves better able to plead the cause of the oppressed than were their ablest and most eloquent defenders. They have defeated purposes and arrested evils that would have greatly retarded the work of God and would have caused great suffering to His people. “They escaped all safe to land” (Acts 27:22-24, 34, 44).Education

The people were surrounded by fierce, warlike tribes, that were eager to seize upon their lands; yet three times every year all the able-bodied men and all the people who could make the journey were directed to leave their homes and repair to the place of assembly, near the center of the land. What was to hinder their enemies from sweeping down upon those unprotected households, to lay them waste with fire and sword? What was to prevent an invasion of the land, that would bring Israel into captivity to some foreign foe? God had promised to be the protector of His people. “The angel of Jehovah encampeth round about them that fear Him, and delivereth them.” Psalm 34:7 [A.R.V.]. While the Israelites went up to worship, divine power would place a restraint upon their enemies. God’s promise was, “I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the Lord thy God thrice in the year.” Exodus 34:24.Psalms 34:8

I have had a most precious experience, and I testify to my fellow laborers in the cause of God, “The Lord is good, and greatly to be praised.” [Psalm 34:8; 96:4.] I testify to my brethren and sisters that the church of Christ, enfeebled and defective as it may be, is the only object on earth on which He bestows His supreme regard. While He extends to all the world His invitation to come to Him and be saved, He commissions His angels to render divine help to every soul that cometh to Him in repentance and contrition, and He comes personally by His Holy Spirit into the midst of His church.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

This experience we all may have. We shall then be insensible to the rebuffs and trials that come to every human being. O, if we could only realize the privilege that is ours, the privilege of resting in Jesus as a child rests in its mother’s arms. We can drink in the spirit and freshness of the life of God. “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” [Psalm 34:8.] We have yet to learn always to consult the will of God, and put His will before our own. When we keep Christ ever before us, when we set our hearts on being like our friend Jesus Christ, who has chosen us, and called us friends, His friends, when we contemplate His character, we shall so love Him that we shall place ourselves where we can be ruled and taught by Him who is wisdom Himself. He is our sanctification and our righteousness. But O, so many put our Christ so far away from their thoughts. He does not appear to them as their best friend.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

God alone can lead you to so recognize His mercy, love, and forbearance that you will have the faith that works by love and purifies the soul. This is the gift of God. It is the opening of the heart to receive the Word which is as the leaves of the tree of life. May God fill your heart with His love so that it may be said that you, my sister, have purified your soul by obeying the truth. Believing in Christ and receiving His transforming grace is not guess-work, but a work which causes Christ’s virtues to be reflected in mind and character. When you gain this experience you will say, “I have tasted and seen that the Lord is good. The Lord Jesus shall be my portion forever.” [See Psalm 34:8; 73:26.] The power of the cross will move in you the mysterious springs of hope and fear, adoration, and love. Angels are watching and waiting and will witness to the fact that the world has you not. Jesus has found you sitting at His feet to learn from Him, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Henceforth, surrendering your will to the will of Christ, you are drawn into a region where the cross is the central object. The world fades from your view. The glory shining from the threshold of heaven is the all-attractive influence. The riches of the grace of Christ hold you in willing obedience. You delight in the precious blessings of your allegiance. You are only too glad to impart to others the gift you have received.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

God’s blessings are constantly bestowed upon us, and we are to recognize His grace, respond to His favors, and send back to heaven unfeigned words of thanksgiving and praise. Let us recognize and appreciate every heavenly gift. O, how far behind we are in this. Did yesterday pass without our offering our sincere word of thanksgiving and praise to God? Shall we not arouse from our lethargy and keep our souls in the love of God, letting His praise flow forth from our lips. “O taste and see that the Lord is good.” [Psalm 34:8.] But do not receive His blessings without feeling a deep sense of the preciousness of His love, which has redeemed us.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

How shall we know for ourselves God’s goodness and His love? The psalmist tells us—not, hear and know, read and know, or believe and know; but—“Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8). Instead of relying upon the word of another, taste for yourself. Experience is knowledge derived from experiment. Experimental religion is what is needed now. “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” 3Testimonies for the Church 5:221.Manuscript Releases, vol. 9 [Nos. 664-770]

This is the kind of experience that we should have. We must not think when we are afflicted that the anger of the Lord is upon us. God brings us into trials in order that we may be drawn near to Him. The Psalmist says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth them out of them all.” [Verse 19.] He does not desire us to be under a cloud. We should pray as did the Psalmist, “Open thou my lips; and my mouth shall show forth Thy praise.” [Psalm 51:15.] The Lord would have us lay hold of these promises for ourselves.Psalms 34:12-14

The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Psalm 34:18.Steps to Christ
Chapter 4—Confession
SC 37.4
Those who have not humbled their souls before God in acknowledging their guilt, have not yet fulfilled the first condition of acceptance. If we have not experienced that repentance which is not to be repented of, and have not with true humiliation of soul and brokenness of spirit confessed our sins, abhorring our iniquity, we have never truly sought for the forgiveness of sin; and if we have never sought, we have never found the peace of God. The only reason why we do not have remission of sins that are past is that we are not willing to humble our hearts and comply with the conditions of the word of truth. Explicit instruction is given concerning this matter. Confession of sin, whether public or private, should be heartfelt and freely expressed. It is not to be urged from the sinner. It is not to be made in a flippant and careless way, or forced from those who have no realizing sense of the abhorrent character of sin. The confession that is the outpouring of the inmost soul finds its way to the God of infinite pity. The psalmist says, “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Psalm 34:18.Homeward Bound

We should cherish gratitude of heart all the days of our life because the Lord has put on record these words: “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] The reconciliation of God to man, and man to God, is sure when certain conditions are met. The Lord says, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” [Psalm 51:17.] Again He says, “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” [Psalm 34:18.] “Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.” [Psalm 138:6.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

In thus honoring those who are educating directly away from the truth, we do not meet the approval of God. Let the words of the Lord, spoken to the world through the prophet Isaiah, have weight with us. “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” [Psalm 34:18.] “To this man will I look,” saith the Lord, “even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at My word.” [Isaiah 66:2.] The humble, who seek the Lord, have wisdom unto eternal life.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

There is hope for the erring. God would have us trust in Him, and walk in faith and righteousness before Him. “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” [Psalm 34:18.] “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found; call ye upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God; for he will abundantly pardon.” [Isaiah 55:6, 7.]Psalms 34:18-19

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” [Verse 3.] Compare this with Isaiah 57:15; 66:2; Psalm 34:18, 19. “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.]Psalms 34:19

Why These Afflictions? September 29
TMK 278.2
We must not think when we are afflicted that the anger of the Lord is upon us. God brings us into trials in order that we may be drawn near to Him. The psalmist says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all” (Psalm 34:19). He does not desire us to be under a cloud.... He does not desire us to go in anguish of spirit. We are not to look at the thorns and the thistles in our experience. We are to go into the garden of God’s Word and pluck the lilies and roses and the fragrant pinks of His promises. Those who look upon the difficulties in their experience will talk doubt and discouragement, for they do not behold Jesus, the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

All were called upon—the house of Aaron, and those who feared the Lord—to trust in the Lord, to prove their immortal principles, for God was their help and their shield. “Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivereth them out of them all.” [Psalm 34:19.] All their troubles and trials but conform them to their Lord and Master. They prove the eternal principles which the love of God, the love of truth, has planted in their hearts.Psalms 34:22

There is a joy and a cross set before each one of you. You may think the cross is hard to bear, but remember that there is a joy before you. You need not feel, if a little cloud passes before your mind, that God has forsaken you. Take your Bible, turn right to the Psalm, and read of how we are to praise the Lord at all times. “I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth” [Psalm 34:1]. God is full of mercy. All He wants for you is that you will open the door of your heart and let Him come in and sanctify your heart and your mind. With God at Dawn
