Chapter 7—The Schools of the Prophets
CE 64.3
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the holy is understanding” [Proverbs 9:10.] The great work of life is character-building; and a knowledge of God is the foundation of all true education. To impart this knowledge, and to mould the character in harmony with it, should be the object of the teacher’s work. The law of God is a reflection of his character. Hence the psalmist says, “All thy commandments are righteousness;” [Psalm 119:172.] and “through thy precepts I get understanding.” [Psalm 119:104.] God has revealed himself to us in his word and in the works of creation. Through the volume of inspiration and the book of nature, we are to obtain a knowledge of God.Patriarchs and Prophets

Chapter 64—David a Fugitive
PP 651.1
As Saul’s hatred of David increased, he became more and more watchful to find an opportunity to take his life; but none of his plans against the anointed of the Lord were successful. Saul gave himself up to the control of the wicked spirit that ruled over him; while David trusted in Him who is mighty in counsel, and strong to deliver. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10), and David’s prayer was continually directed to God, that he might walk before Him in a perfect way.Patriarchs and Prophets
Chapter 72—The Rebellion of Absalom
PP 739.1
Ahithophel had been held in high esteem for his wisdom, but he was destitute of the enlightenment which comes from God. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10); and this, Ahithophel did not possess, or he could hardly have based the success of treason upon the crime of incest. Men of corrupt hearts plot wickedness, as if there were no overruling Providence to cross their designs; but “He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.” Psalm 2:4. The Lord declares: “They would none of My counsel: they despised all My reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.” Proverbs 1:30-32.Reflecting Christ

Parents, there is a great work for you to do for Jesus, who has done everything for you. Take Him as your guide and helper. God has not withheld from you the very best gift He had to give—His only-begotten Son. Children and youth should not be hindered in coming to Jesus. Satan seeks to bind the children to himself as with bands of steel, and you can attain success in bringing them to Jesus only through determined personal effort. Children and youth should receive more earnest labor, for they are the hope of the church. Joseph, Daniel and his fellows, Samuel, David, John, and Timothy are shining examples that testify to the fact that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10).That I May Know Him

CE 246.1
All who become learners in the school of Christ excel both in the quality and the extent of their education. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” [Proverbs 9:10.] A knowledge of God and his requirements will open the understanding of the student to realize his responsibilities to God and to the world. To this end he will feel that his talents must be developed in that way which will produce the very best results. This cannot be done unless all the precepts and principles of religion are connected with his school education. In no case should he disconnect God from his studies. In the pursuit of knowledge, he is searching for truth; and all truth comes from God, the source of truth. Students who are virtuous, and are imbued with the Spirit of Christ, will grasp knowledge with all their faculties. Education acquired without Bible religion is disrobed of its true brightness and glory.—“Testimony,” No. 28.From Eternity Past

Parents who profess to believe the truth should earnestly strive for the salvation of their children, teaching them both by precept and example that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” [Proverbs 9:10.] It is with God, who looks upon the heart, that we have to do. Have the parents given their whole hearts to God? Have parents appreciated the countless blessings He has bestowed? Have they educated themselves in presenting gratitude offerings to God in response for all His blessings until their affections are set on things above, and not on things on the earth. The heart is the citadel of the whole man, and until the heart is wholly on the Lord’s side, the enemy will find his strong hold there, and no human power can dislodge him. The Lord alone can do this work.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

The Lord Jesus has paid the ransom for your soul and the souls of your children and are you going to take the course that some took in the days of Christ? The record says that many of the priests and rulers believed on him, but did not confess him for fear of being turned out of the synagogue. Why? Because they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. [John 12:42, 43.] Parents, an awful responsibility rests upon you. If you find no pleasure in rendering a whole-hearted service to God, if you close the door lest truth and righteousness shall enter in, lest light shall penetrate the darkness and worldliness that surrounds you, remember that you are manifesting the fact that you prefer the friendship of your neighbors to the friendship of God. By precept and example, you are training your children to think that it does not matter whether they keep the commandments of God, or choose the ways of those who despise his law, and trample his requirements under their feet. Your children have been bought with a price, they are the property of Jesus Christ. And the loss of their souls will be placed to your account, since they have been given into your guardianship. If you walk in the path of those who trample upon the law of Jehovah, you will feel no burden of responsibility to lead your children in the path which you do not choose to travel yourself. Parents choose error in the full face of light, and can they expect that their children will walk in the path of truth? The world is full of disobedient, unthankful, unholy children. Yet parents will choose the path of darkness rather than the path of light for themselves and their household. They do not appreciate the fact that “the fear of the Lord is beginning of wisdom.” [Proverbs 9:10.] Therefore, they discard home religion. Though feeling themselves that they are under the censure of God, yet they lead their children in the way which they have chosen. The Lord will approach nigh unto you in judgment; for you exclude truth and righteousness from your home when you say, I want not thy ways, Oh God. I want to follow my own impulse. I respect not the servants of God. I care not to wear the yoke of Christ, or to watch over, guide and train the children God has given me so that they shall love and fear him. Thus you lead the most precious possession you have to become the sport of Satan’s temptations exposing them to the peril of being lost to Christ, and lost to heaven. They are left to swell the ranks of unbelievers and commandment-breakers.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Let all who hear of this affliction learn the lesson that a book education is not the most essential knowledge. Let them learn that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” [Proverbs 9:10.] Worldly education cannot make a symmetrical, perfect man. It must be combined with the wisdom that cometh from above. An intelligent knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ whom He hath sent is the essential knowledge, for “this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.” [John 17:3.] “Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his wisdom: but let him that glorieth, glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord, which exercise loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.” [Jeremiah 9:23, 24.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Those popular authors have not pointed out to the students the way that leads to eternal life. “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hath sent.” John 17:3. The authors of these books current in our schools are recommended and exalted as learned men; their education is in every way deficient, unless they themselves have been educated in the school of Christ, and by practical knowledge bear witness to the Word of God as the most essential study for children and youth. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” [Proverbs 9:10.] Books should have been prepared to place in the hands of students that would educate them to have a sincere, reverent love of truth and steadfast integrity. The class of studies which are positively essential in the formation of character to give them a preparation for the future life should be kept ever before them.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

All such studies are to be encouraged as are essential to the development of Christlike character. The great Teacher calls for every youth to learn the true philosophy of education—What shall I do to be saved? “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” [Proverbs 9:10.] It is the privilege of the student to make the most of his opportunities; they are above price. It should not be his great ambition to stand highest in book-learning, but to learn methods of increasing his efficiency to do good in spreading the knowledge of Christ in the world. By diligence and fidelity, he is constantly enlarging his capacity for knowing God, and this knowledge Christ recognizes as eternal life to the receiver. He is able to comprehend more and more of the great plan of salvation, and he yokes up with Christ, cooperating with the Redeemer in His work.Counsels on Health

God’s instrumentalities should seek to follow in the footsteps of the divine Healer. Those who come to the sanitarium should be taught how to take care of the body, remembering the words, “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. Have we a faith that works by love and purifies the soul? Have we faith according to the light we have received? Loyalty to God should be the sum and substance of all education. It should be presented as the foundation of education. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” [Proverbs 9:10]; and when the fear of the Lord is taught, the wisdom of God comes with it. But the devil has gained supremacy in the world, and that is why education in this line has not been given before. The authors of many of the books studied in the various schools of today are infidels. It is not according to God’s order that such books shall be studied. Our schools have been instituted not only to give our youth a knowledge of scientific truth but to open to them the Scriptures, that they may be partakers of the benefit of the gospel, be transformed in character, and be elevated in value in the sight of heavenly intelligences. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” [Proverbs 9:10.] This is the foundation of true knowledge; but Satan is opposed to having human agents gain a true knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ whom he hath sent. He is willing that the human agent should learn anything but this; for “This is the life eternal that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom he hath sent.” [John 17:3.] “Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.” [Jeremiah 9:23, 24.] “Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the high God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgressions, the fruit of my body for the sins of my soul? He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” “Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgressions of the remnant of his heritage? He retaineth not his anger forever, because he delighteth in mercy. There is a constant progress in the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ whom He has sent, but when men feel that they are wise above a “Thus saith the Lord,” they need to become fools in order that they may be wise. The living oracles of God were given to lie at the very foundation of all true education. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” [Proverbs 9:10.] There is a distinction to be made between the sacred and the common, and we are accountable to God if we place human wisdom at the head as essential for education. Language may change, and study books may present the supposed improvements, but, “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made. There must be no fanciful and theatrical exercises, but the Word, Christ’s words, are to be your stronghold. You shall seek the Lord daily in humble prayer and that in different companies in different places. Simplicity of true godliness is to be put into the work, not a make-believe work which some may interpret against us. There is to be a general taking in of the places that are desirable; and let not superficial persons, who themselves need first to learn how to manage wisely, [be employed]. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” [Proverbs 9:10.] My brethren, ministers spread out over too much ground. Take time to give most convincing Bible readings. Calmly are these matters to be studied. But the Holy Spirit’s power will do that for the penitent souls that have first heard the reasons of our faith. Yourselves may be in need of training and the Spirit of Christ. Most precious Scriptures full of instruction are to be brought in. And the more calm, sensible reasoning from the convincing words of Scripture will be the most convincing Scripture evidence [needed] to settle the mind. There is another kind of education that is very different. Its fundamental principle, as stated by the greatest Teacher the world has ever known, is, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness.” Matthew 6:33. Its aim is not selfish; its purpose is to honor God and to serve Him in the world. Both the studies pursued and the industrial training sought have this object in view. The word of God is studied; a vital connection with God is maintained, and the better feelings and traits of character are brought into exercise. This kind of education produces results as lasting as eternity. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10), and better than all knowledge is an understanding of His word.Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students

O, how can God bear with the misdeeds of those who have had great light and advantages, and yet follow the course of their own choosing, to their eternal harm? Solomon, who had solemnly charged the people at the dedication of the temple, “Let your heart be perfect with the Lord your God” [1 Kings 8:61], chose his own way, and in his own heart separated from God. The mind that was once given to God and inspired of God to write the most precious words of wisdom (the book of Proverbs)—truths which are immortalized—that noble mind, through evil associations and yielding to temptations, became inefficient, weak in moral power, and Solomon dishonored himself, dishonored Israel, and dishonored his God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs, but after a time his wisdom became mingled with chaff. When came the chaff? After a manhood of such glorious promise, a change came in Solomon’s history. He did not continue true to his purity and allegiance to God. He broke through the barriers which God had erected to preserve His people from idolatry. The Lord had singled out Israel as a nation, making them the depositaries of sacred truth, to be given to the world. But Solomon cherished pride of political powers. He encouraged alliances with pagan kingdoms. He procured the silver of Tarshish and the gold of Ophir, but it was at the expense of destroying sacred trusts. Evil communications corrupted good manners. One false movement led to an acquaintance with idolaters. He formed marriage alliances with the daughters of pagan worshipers, and his wives led him away from God. His separation from God through communication with idolaters ruined him.
