Chapter 45—Cyrus Sets the Exiles Free
SS 285.1
More than a century before the birth of Cyrus, Inspiration had mentioned the work he should do in taking Babylon unawares and in preparing the way for the release of the children of the captivity: “Thus saith the Lord to His anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; ... to open before him the two-leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut; I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron.” Isaiah 45:1, 2.SS 285.3
“Thus saith the Lord ... of Cyrus, He is My shepherd, and shall perform all My pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.” “He shall build My city, and he shall let go My captives, not for price nor reward, saith the Lord of hosts.” Isaiah 44:24, 28; 45:13.Prophets and Kings

“Thus saith the Lord to His anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; ... to open before him the two-leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut; I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: and I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the Lord, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.” Isaiah 45:1-3.PK 552.2
“Cyrus, he is My shepherd, and shall perform all My pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.” “I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build My city, and he shall let go My captives, not for price nor reward, saith the Lord of hosts.” Isaiah 44:28; 45:13.PK 557.2
As the king saw the words foretelling, more than a hundred years before his birth, the manner in which Babylon should be taken; as he read the message addressed to him by the Ruler of the universe, “I girded thee, though thou hast not known Me: that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside Me;” as he saw before his eyes the declaration of the eternal God, “For Jacob My servant’s sake, and Israel Mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known Me;” as he traced the inspired record, “I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build My city, and he shall let go My captives, not for price nor reward,” his heart was profoundly moved, and he determined to fulfill his divinely appointed mission. Isaiah 45:5, 6, 4, 13. He would let the Judean captives go free; he would help them restore the temple of Jehovah.Isaiah 45:1-25

In the forty-first to the forty-fifth chapters of Isaiah, God very fully reveals His purpose for His people; and these chapters should be prayerfully studied. The chapters we were reading in course were in Isaiah. He read with us, and the very portions of Scripture which specified his sin was read by himself. We thought we would give him every chance to make the application to his own case and this might awaken in him a remorse, but it did not seem to have the least influence. He did that night—after we labored with him a long while and then left him with Brother Rousseau and Brother Prescott—confess his sins of vileness, and the conditions were plainly stated, if he would break away at once, and return to New Zealand, we would furnish him money. But he said positively he would not go to New Zealand.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. Surely, shall one say, In the Lord have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.” [Isaiah 45:21-25.] Isaiah 45. Read this entire chapter, and see if you have learned the lessons God has given you. Let every teacher and student examine himself as he reads. Read also chapters 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45. God chooses His workers from all classes of people, and imbues them with His own spirit. So it was in ancient times. The men and women of God’s selection were of intense earnestness, full of zeal. The last books of the Old Testament show us workers taken from the laborers in the field. Others were men of high ability and extensive learning, but the Lord gave them visions and messages. These men of the Old Testament spoke of the things transpiring in their day, and Daniel, Isaiah, and Ezekiel not only spoke of things that concerned them as present truth, but their sight reached down to the future, and to what should occur in these last days.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

We know altogether too little of the greatness of the love and compassion of God. Let students put to the stretch the faculties of their mind, that they may comprehend the forty-fifth chapter of Isaiah. Such chapters as this should be placed in form and brought into our schools as valuable studies. They are better than romance or fables. Why have our schools been so dependent upon books which tell so little of the city we claim to be seeking, whose Builder and Maker is God? Our lesson books should contain the loftiest themes of thought. Heaven is our home. Our citizenship is above, and our lives must not be devoted to a world which is soon to be destroyed. We need the Word of God revealed in living characters. What pure, excellent language is found in the Word of God! What elevating ennobling principles!14LtMs, Ms 96, 1899, par. 20
As you look at the wonderful things God’s hand has made, let your proud, foolish heart feel its dependence and inferiority. As you consider these things, you will have a sense of God’s condescension. “The Lord doth build up Jerusalem; he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel.” [Psalm 147:2.] “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. Please read the forty-fifth and forty-ninth chapters of Isaiah. The Lord calls upon all to make diligent work for repentance. He calls upon our physicians to see the importance of establishing small sanitariums in connection with our schools. True medical missionary workers, laboring under the direction of God to fulfil His purpose, will do a hundredfold more good than it is possible for food stores or restaurants to do, as they are now conducted. The Lord’s workers in every line are to cherish pure, clean principles free from any taint of selfishness. It is such principles only that are acceptable to God. “Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

The ruin of Jerusalem was a symbol of the final ruin that shall overwhelm the world. The prophecies that received a partial fulfillment in the overthrow of Jerusalem have a more direct application to the last days. We are now standing on the threshold of great and solemn events. A crisis is before us, such as the world has never witnessed. And sweetly to us, as to the first disciples, comes the assurance that God’s kingdom ruleth over all. The program of coming events is in the hands of our Maker. The Majesty of heaven has the destiny of nations, as well as the concerns of His church, in His own charge. The divine Instructor is saying to every agent in the accomplishment of His plans, as He said to Cyrus, “I girded thee, though thou hast not known Me” (Isaiah 45:5).—Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, 120, 121.Jesus, Name Above All Names

It was stated that if selfishness should be developed, if the men in office should accept large wages, the blessing of the Lord could not attend the institution until these things should be corrected. The Lord’s work is earnest and decided, above deceit and hypocrisy. His true shepherds will not praise and exalt man. They will come before the people with a plain “Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.” [Isaiah 45:11.] They will bear His message, whether men will hear or whether they will forbear. If men despise God’s Word, and trust in oppression, hypocrisy, and worldliness, they must declare against them God’s denunciations, so that if possible they may be aroused to repentance. If they are too proud to repent and confess their errors, to turn to God, welcoming His salvation and seeking His favor, the Lord will remove His light from them, and will leave them to walk in the way they have chosen.Isaiah 45:11-12

All His work is of a character that is not discernible; all things spiritual or material stood up before the Lord God at His word and were created at His pleasure, “the heavens ... and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth” (Psalm 33:6). “I,” said the Lord, “have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all the host have I commanded” (Isaiah 45:12). God made the world; He was not dependent upon pre-existent matter. “I,” saith the Lord, “have made the earth, and created man upon it.” He is Himself the great and constant worker. He watereth the earth and blesseth the increase on it; He “covereth the heaven with clouds,” and “prepareth rain for the earth. ... He giveth snow like wool: and scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes” (Psalm 147:8, 16). “He divideth the sea with his power” “and laith up the depths in storehouses” (Job 26:12; Psalm 33:7). PK 731.4
Fellow pilgrim, we are still amid the shadows and turmoil of earthly activities; but soon our Saviour is to appear to bring deliverance and rest. Let us by faith behold the blessed hereafter as pictured by the hand of God. He who died for the sins of the world is opening wide the gates of Paradise to all who believe on Him. Soon the battle will have been fought, the victory won. Soon we shall see Him in whom our hopes of eternal life are centered. And in His presence the trials and sufferings of this life will seem as nothingness. The former things “shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.” “Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. You who are resting your hope on self are building on the sand. But it is not yet too late to escape the impending ruin. Before the tempest breaks, flee to the sure foundation. “Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, of sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.” “Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.” “Ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end.” Isaiah 28:16, R.V.; 45:22; 41:10; 45:17.Isaiah 45:17-25

There is no excuse for religious defection or religious despondency, because all the promises of heavenly grace are for those who hunger and thirst after righteousness. Christ declares, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled.” [Verse 6.] “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall swear. Surely, shall one say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength; even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.” [Isaiah 45:22-25.]16LtMs, Lt 118, 1901, par. 6
Standing in the righteousness in Jesus Christ, the sinner is justified by faith. “Israel shall be saved ... with an everlasting salvation; ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end. ... I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth; I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain; I the Lord speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.” [Verses 17, 19.] “I will bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not tarry; and I will place salvation in Zion for Israel my glory.” [Isaiah 46:13.]Isaiah 45:18

Why we worship God—The duty to worship God is based upon the fact that He is the Creator and that to Him all other beings owe their existence. And wherever, in the Bible, His claim to reverence and worship, above the gods of the heathen, is presented, there is cited the evidence of His creative power. “All the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.” Psalm 96:5. “To whom then will ye liken Me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things.” “Thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God Himself that formed the earth and made it: ... Chapter 4—The Plan of Redemption
PP 67.1
Not only man but the earth had by sin come under the power of the wicked one, and was to be restored by the plan of redemption. At his creation Adam was placed in dominion over the earth. But by yielding to temptation, he was brought under the power of Satan. “Of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.” 2 Peter 2:19. When man became Satan’s captive, the dominion which he held, passed to his conqueror. Thus Satan became “the god of this world.” 2 Corinthians 4:4. He had usurped that dominion over the earth which had been originally given to Adam. But Christ, by His sacrifice paying the penalty of sin, would not only redeem man, but recover the dominion which he had forfeited. All that was lost by the first Adam will be restored by the second. Says the prophet, “O tower of the flock, the stronghold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion.” Micah 4:8. And the apostle Paul points forward to the “redemption of the purchased possession.” Ephesians 1:14. God created the earth to be the abode of holy, happy beings. The Lord “formed the earth and made it; He hath established it, He created it not in vain, He formed it to be inhabited.” Isaiah 45:18. “And beside Me there is none else.” [See Isaiah 45:21.] In the destruction of the old world by a flood of waters, God gave evidence that men had exceeded the bounds prescribed through His long-sufferance. And whenever a people, with a “thus saith the Lord” to guide them, presume upon His mercy and go decidedly counter to His will, despising all His warnings, they finally exceed the limits of grace. Then God interferes and vindicates the honor of His law. He represses the increase of unrighteousness by blotting out the race who become indifferent to His law, which had been made known to the inhabitants of the Noachian <world>. Thus the Lord reveals to the whole human family that it is possible to go so far in sin and disgraceful transgression of His law that it becomes necessary for Him to limit human life and interpose in His wrath to prevent their spoiling one another in continual disobedience and defiance of His law.Isaiah 45:21-22

That which is done for the advantage of God’s cause must be done according to the ten precepts of Jehovah. He will not accept the advantage that accrues from oppression of His children, and from cutting them off from their just rights. His work has been handled, and is still being handled, by men who have not a vital connection with God. But the invitation of the Lord is extended to those who will turn from their evil ways and seek Him. He says, “Tell ye, and bring them near; yea let them take counsel together; who hath declared this from ancient times? Who hath told it from that time? Have not I the Lord? Brethren, your aims are altogether too low. You have not used the great moral faculties of the soul,—faith, hope, and love. These powers are not given us to lie dormant, but that through their exercise the soul may be brought into harmony with heaven. With many of you they are paralyzed through inaction, and, as a consequence, you are weak and helpless; but do not let your great need discourage you. The Saviour of sinners, the Friend of the friendless, with compassion infinitely greater than that of a tender mother for a loved and afflicted child, is inviting, “Look unto me, and be ye saved.” “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” [Isaiah 45:22; 53:5.] We may take hold of his strength, and make peace with God. Adam and Eve were banished from Eden for transgressing the law of God. Christ was to suffer without the boundaries of the holy place. He died outside the camp, where felons and murderers were executed. There He trod the winepress alone, suffering the penalty, that should have rested on the sinner, to rest on Him. Oh, how deep and full of significance are the words, “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us.” [Galatians 3:13.] He went forth without the camp, thus showing that He gave His life, not only for the Jewish nation, but for the whole world. The hand of the Lord was in the inscription “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews,” that was written out in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, and placed above the cross. [John 19:19.] Thus Christ proclaimed to all kindreds, tongues, and people, “I gave my life for you. I know that the Lord Jesus will not leave or forsake any soul that trusts in Him. He will honor your faith. He will never betray you. You can safely trust in your Redeemer. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God. Do not become distrustful or doubting; for I am by your side. Rest yourself in My hands.”Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

We need now as never before to call attention to the words, “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth.” [Isaiah 45:22.] What the Lord inscribed upon His temple was in perfect harmony with His plan. His invitation is to go forth to all places of the earth. Unlimited was His invitation of mercy. “My house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.” [Isaiah 56:7.] It shall proclaim that I am now on My throne, giving audience to the world. “Let the people praise thee, O God, let all the people praise thee.” “And let the whole earth be filled with his glory.” [Psalm 67:3; 72:19.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

“In Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith which worketh by love.” [Galatians 5:6.] Let us walk humbly with God, seeking Him diligently and serving Him earnestly, lest we be found unprofitable servants. Our Lord loves to have us trust Him implicitly, recognizing the sacredness of His work and His power to carry it forward. We need not be in darkness and doubt. Christ is constantly inviting us, “Look unto me. He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” [Isaiah 45:22; John 8:12.] No man can look to Christ without being strengthened and uplifted. By beholding Him, he is changed into the same image and cherishes the same spirit. All sullenness and gloom are gone. His experience is as clear as the sunlight. The consciousness that Jesus loves him fills him with joy and gladness, and he reflects the divine image. I am instructed to say that we must not look to any human being for power or experience, for strength or guidance. Christ says, “Look unto Me. I am the Light of the world. He that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” [Isaiah 45:22; John 8:12.] I speak to those who claim to be children of God. Is it not time that we knew the source of our strength and the source of our power? Shall we not, from the beginning of this year, make a record more pleasing to the Lord? Scenes are presented to me that I can find no language to describe. Trials will come that will humble hearts. Let no one feel that he is safe in following his own way, or in making man his trust. The Lord calls for men of experience, men who will carry responsibilities in His name and in His strength, men who will receive His grace to impart it to others.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

It is highly important to know how to approach the sick with the comfort of a hope gained through faith in Christ Jesus and acceptance of His promises. When the awakened conscience cries out, “Lord, be merciful to me a sinner; make me Thy child,” be ready to tell the sufferer, the once indifferent one, that there is hope for him, that in Jesus he will find a refuge. The Saviour is inviting every one, “Look unto Me, and live. Come unto Me, and find rest.” [See Isaiah 45:22; Matthew 11:28.] Those who in meekness and in love present the hope of the gospel to afflicted souls so much in need of this hope are the mouthpiece of the One who gave Himself for all mankind, that He might become a Healer, a tender, sympathetic, compassionate Saviour.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

I have written at all times, in the night season and in the day, to set before our people the mistakes the Lord had presented to me in regard to the wages that were urged upon the managers that they would have brought into the publishing interest. I had to present these things before them. The true state of things has never been understood. Selfish personal interest was the main burden. After the cause of God was nearly wrecked, a new administration came in. And now the same thing has been brought in at the Washington Sanitarium. But if I should not live to bear my testimony of the word of the Lord, there will be found in this, my diary, the message that God has given me that our physicians and our sanitariums and our men in the printing office are never to go over the ground that has nearly wrecked the work of God in Battle Creek. Leading men now in our sanitarium, who have just come from Australia, and who spoiled its record, are not to consider that they are to require large wages, as is proposed. These plans are not the Lord’s plans. The physicians in the sanitarium at Washington must move guardedly and must not suppose that it rests with them to require or set the wages they shall have in this new field. There is to be an understanding and a clear defining of the work. Economy needs to be maintained in all things, and yet there is not to be a poverty diet or a deprivation of food that will surely witness against the managers. As represented to me in the visions of the night, we were in conversation in council meetings. Letters were read, and there were missionary calls for helpers and for means from various places in far-off countries. Christ’s laborers are to be sent. The message is to be given. “Look unto Me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth.” [Isaiah 45:22.] Who is comprehended in all the ends of the earth? The Lord calls for those who understand Bible truth to carry the same message relating to the present time to heaven nations. Some understand, for they are beginning to see the necessity of carrying the message to other countries. The teacher becomes a learner of the language of foreign nations, and the people become learners of the gospel message. Means must be sent to sustain the workers in these heathen countries. Missionaries are raised up in those dark quarters of the earth, and they teach their own people the gospel of Christ. Light begins to shine in all parts of our globe.22LtMs, Ms 157, 1907, par. 9
Once get the eye of the ignorant, superstitious idolaters upon the Son of God who gave His life a sacrifice to the world, there is not, cannot be any stumbling when the minds of the heathen are enlightened to see Jesus the Gift, the wonderful Gift to our world. Fear not, for we are laborers together with Christ to bind souls through the enlightenment of the Word to a living Saviour who is sending His heavenly messengers with the word, “Look unto Me and be ye saved all the ends of the earth.” [Verse 22.] The ends of the earth embrace all heathen lands as much as all intelligent nationalities. The forbidding peculiarities will change when Christ is brought to view, for we are all laborers together with Christ. “Look unto Me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth.” Christians, look and live. And the last words of Christ, as He was drawn heavenward to meet the angel throng that was waiting for Him, were, “And, lo, I am with you alway, even until the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Two angels of the heavenly throng were standing beside the disciples and asked them, “Why stand ye gazing up into the heavens? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” [Acts 1:11.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

Now, my sister, I have given you this rambling sketch of my sickness in order that you may be comforted in the Lord, and not cherish a spirit of repining and discouragement. Your husband is engaged in a good work. He is needed in the Australian field. He can be a blessing to many. My dear sister, if you will look away from yourself to Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith and mine, you will be a happy woman. “Look unto Me,” says the Saviour. [Isaiah 45:22.] “Trust in Me; believe in Me; and do not weaken your physical and moral powers by looking at your own weakness.” Look unto Jesus, your pitying, loving Saviour. If you cast your helpless soul on Christ, He will bring joy and peace to your soul. He will be your crown of rejoicing, your exceeding great reward. Listen to the words I speak. Exercise yourself in every possible way. This is what I have had to do. Be cheerful and praise the Lord. That I May Know Him

Do not let your great need discourage you. The Saviour of sinners, the Friend of the friendless, with compassion infinitely greater than that of a tender mother for a loved and afflicted child, is inviting, “Look unto me, and be ye saved” (Isaiah 45:22). “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5)....The Desire of Ages

And the Holy Spirit through the prophet Isaiah declares: “To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto Him? ... Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is He that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.... To whom then will ye liken Me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: He calleth them all by names by the greatness of His might, for that He is strong in power; not one faileth. Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God? Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? ... He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might He increaseth strength.” “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.” “Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” This is the message written in nature, which the Sabbath is appointed to keep in memory. When the Lord bade Israel hallow His Sabbaths, He said, “They shall be a sign between Me and you, that ye may know that I am Jehovah your God.” Isaiah 40:18-29; 41:10; 45:22; Ezekiel 20:20, R. Too much power is invested in humanity when a man has it in his power to rule or ruin. The true and living God is to be exalted. All nations are to hear the proclamation of the gospel message. Many, convicted and converted, will bow in humility before the Lord, making an unreserved consecration of themselves to Him. The message is to go to all parts of the world. “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.” [Isaiah 45:22, 23.] The words inscribed on the Lord’s temple harmonize with His unlimited invitation of mercy, “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all people.” It shall proclaim that I, the living God, sit upon My throne as Ruler, giving audience to the world. Satan will manufacture his diversions that men may not think about God. The world, filled with sport and pleasure-loving, is always thirsting for some new interests. And how little time and thought are given to the Creator of the heavens and the earth. God calls upon His creatures to turn their attention from the confusion and perplexity around them, and admire His handiwork. The heavenly bodies are worthy of contemplation. God has made them for the benefit of man, and as we study His works, angels of God will be by our side to enlighten our minds and guard them from satanic deception. As you look at the wonderful things God’s hand has made, let your proud, foolish heart feel its dependence and inferiority. As you consider these things, you will have a sense of God’s condescension. Not alone for men in positions of large responsibility is the lesson of Elijah’s experience in learning anew how to trust God in the hour of trial. He who was Elijah’s strength is strong to uphold every struggling child of His, no matter how weak. Of everyone He expects loyalty, and to everyone He grants power according to the need. In his own strength man is strengthless; but in the might of God he may be strong to overcome evil and to help others to overcome. Satan can never gain advantage of him who makes God his defense. “Surely, shall one say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength.” Isaiah 45:24.Isaiah 45:24-25

The Lord has resources. His hand is on the machinery. When the time came for His temple to be rebuilt, He moved upon Cyrus as His agent to discern the prophecies concerning Himself, and to grant the Jewish people their liberty.12The S.D.A. Bible Commentary 4:1175.CC 257.3

As the king saw the words foretelling, more than a hundred years before his birth, the manner in which Babylon should be taken; as he read the message addressed to him by the Ruler of the universe, ... his heart was profoundly moved, and he determined to fulfill his divinely appointed mission. He would let the Judean captives go free; he would help them restore the temple of Jehovah. In a written proclamation published “throughout all his kingdom,” Cyrus made known his desire to provide for the return of the Hebrews and for the rebuilding of their temple....CC 257.5

Upon Zerubbabel ... Cyrus placed the responsibility of acting as governor of the company returning to Judea; and with him was associated Joshua the high priest. The Lord God omnipotent reigneth. All kings, all nations, are His, under His rule and government. His resources are infinite. The wise man declares, “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.” Those upon whose actions hang the destinies of nations, are watched over with a vigilance that knows no relaxation by Him who “giveth salvation unto kings.” 14The S.D.A.
