“Hear this word that the Lord hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying, You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities. Can two walk together, except they be agreed” [Amos 3:1-3]? This testimony was given to the children of Israel.

Shall two walk together, except they be agreed?” [Amos 3:1-3.] This testimony was given to the children of Israel.

Christ is the light of the world. He says, “He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness.” [John 8:12.] “He that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.” [John 12:35.] “The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not.” [2 Corinthians 4:4.] Those who follow Christ shall not walk in darkness; but all who follow their own ideas, walking contrary to the Word of God, are of the class concerning whom the Lord spoke to the prophet, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” [Amos 3:3.]

The Lord always rewards painstaking effort. He chooses His servants from all ranks of life. Amos, a herdsman of Tekoa, was chosen as a prophet of Israel.

RH February 5, 1914, par. 16

Through Amos also the Lord clearly revealed his purpose to bring judgments upon his impenitent people: “Hear this word that the Lord hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying, You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities. Can two walk together, except they be agreed? Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing? Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him? shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all? Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it?” “The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord God hath spoken, who can but prophesy?” Amos 3:1-6, 8.

RH February 5, 1914, par. 17

“Publish in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say, Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great tumults in the midst thereof, and the oppressed in the midst thereof. For they know not to do right, saith the Lord, who store up violence and robbery in their palaces. Therefore thus saith the Lord God; An adversary there shall be even round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be spoiled.” Verses 9-11.

RH February 5, 1914, par. 18

“In the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him I will also visit the altars of Beth-el: and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground. And I will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith the Lord.” Verses 14, 15.

Chapter 15—Isaac’s Marriage: The Happiest in the Bible

EP 110.4

No one who fears God can without danger connect himself with one who fears Him not. “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” Amos 3:3. The happiness and prosperity of marriage depends upon the unity of the parties; but between the believer and the unbeliever there is a radical difference of tastes, inclinations, and purposes. However pure and correct one’s principles, the influence of an unbelieving companion will have a tendency to lead away from God.

As God’s professed people we are to have an experimental knowledge of Him. We are to search for the doctrine of Christ, armed with faith, and employing whatever resources God has provided. Diligent prayerful search is essential. “Enter ye in at the strait gate,” says Christ, “for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there be that go in thereat. Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” [Matthew 7:13, 14.] There must be well-organized effort and unity in our co-operation with Christ. Charity (love) must pervade the church. All evil-speaking and bearing of false witness is disloyalty to God and to His cause. There must be unity of action, love, and disinterested benevolence. Draw together in harmonious action. “How can two walk together except they be agreed?” [Amos 3:3.]

You have placed yourselves where I cannot harmonize with you. I have not had the same confidence as formerly that we could work together and be to one another all that we might be, and that God would have us be. This could not be now as it might have been. I need not expatiate upon this. Your course has not been right, and God cannot bless either of you in pursuing it. You have placed yourselves where the Lord cannot bless our efforts in working together. The word was spoken, “How can two walk together except they be agreed?” [Amos 3:3.]

The Lord has repeatedly instructed me to say to His people that they are not to bind up with the world in business partnerships of any kind, and especially in so important a matter as the establishment of a sanitarium. Believers and unbelievers, serving two masters, cannot properly be linked together in the Lord’s work. “How can two walk together, except they be agreed?” [Amos 3:3.] God forbids His people to unite with unbelievers in the building up of His institutions.

Who presides over and controls the selfish heart? Could the curtain be withdrawn, that passionate, professed believer would see a legion of satanic angels controlling him with their own spirit. He is standing in the presence of holy angels and in the presence of Satan’s hellish army, and his conduct shows that he has no right to the name of “Christian.” He professes much, but brings forth thorn-berries. Self is the mainspring of action. One such exhibition before the people is sufficient to testify—How “can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3)—Manuscript 176, 1898, pp. 4, 5. Shall one who is seeking for glory, honor, immortality, eternal life, form a union with another who refuses to rank with the soldiers of the cross of Christ? Will you who profess to choose Christ for your master and to be obedient to Him in all things, unite your interests with one who is ruled by the prince of the powers of darkness? “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” Amos 3:3. “If two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of My Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 18:19. But how strange the sight! While one of those so closely united is engaged in devotion, the other is indifferent and careless; while one is seeking the way to everlasting life, the other is in the broad road to death.

God makes His presence and will known to His people through appointed ministers who are walking in the light. He has channels through which He can communicate light. “Surely the Lord will do nothing but he revealeth his secrets unto his servants the prophets.” [Amos 3:7.] God does reveal His secret purposes to His chosen agents, whose duty it is to declare the same to His people, that they may take warning and turn from a course which will surely bring the wrath of God upon them. He sends reproofs and warnings that they may turn to Him, that His wrath may be turned away, and His approval rest on them. But often the perversity and stubbornness of the human heart leads men to refuse the light because it does not harmonize with their ideas. They know that if they receive the light, they would have to repent and be converted. They justify their own deceptions, and do not correct their ways.

14LtMs, Ms 10, 1899, par. 14

No form of worship, no religious service, can supply the want of reconciliation with God. The regenerating grace of Christ is necessary in order for men and women to abide in Christ, and work the works of Christ. “Can two walk together except they be agreed?” [Amos 3:3.] The Lord has a controversy with His people in these last days, who please self, and serve the world, the flesh, and the devil. Their influence endangers the church of Christ, yet those who bear testimony against them are derided, and their words despised. But God will work through His ministers as He worked through Moses. He will ratify in heaven their judgments and decisions, and at the last great day will produce these decisions.

It is God’s purpose that his people shall be informed and enlightened, knowing and understanding not only the times in which they live but also what is yet to come. “Surely the Lord will do nothing, but he revealeth his secrets unto his servants the prophets.” Amos 3:7. This contrasts God’s people, “the children of light,” 1 Thessalonians 5:5, with the people of the world.

Chapter 13—William Miller

4SP 208.2

The Lord, in his great mercy, does not bring judgments upon the earth without giving warning to its inhabitants by the mouth of his servants. Says the prophet Amos, “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” [Amos 3:7.] When the iniquity of the antediluvians moved him to bring a flood of waters upon the earth, he first made known to them his purpose, that they might have opportunity to turn from their evil ways. For a hundred and twenty years was sounded in their ears the warning to repent, lest the wrath of God be manifested in their destruction. But the message seemed to them an idle tale, and they believed it not. From unbelief they proceeded to scorn and contempt, ridiculing the warning as highly improbable, and unworthy of their notice. Emboldened in their wickedness, they mocked the messenger of God, made light of his entreaties, and even accused him of presumption. How dare one man stand up against all the great men of the earth? If Noah’s message were true, why did not all the world see it and believe it? One man’s assertion against the wisdom of thousands! They would not credit the warning, nor would they seek shelter in the ark.
