Context of Joshua 7:15
13Arise! Consecrate the people and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, for thus says Adonai, the God of Israel: Something under the ban is in the midst of you, Israel. You will not be able to stand up before your enemies until you remove whatever is under the ban from among you. 14In the morning you will approach by your tribes. It will be that the tribe that Adonai takes will come forward by families, and the family that Adonai takes will come forward by households, and the household that Adonai takes will come forward man by man. Then whoever is taken with whatever is under the ban must be burned with fire, he and all belonging to him, because he has transgressed the covenant of Adonai, and because he has committed a disgrace in Israel.’” 16So Joshua rose up early in the morning and brought Israel forward by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken. 17Then he brought forward the clans of Judah, and He took the family of the Zerahites. Then he brought forward the family of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was taken.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-15Verses 10-15 God awakens Joshua to inquiry, by telling him that when this accursed thing was put away, all would be well. Times of danger and trouble should be times of reformation. We should look at home, into our own hearts, into our own houses, and make diligent search to find out if there be not some accursed thing there, which God sees and abhors; some secret lust, some unlawful gain, some undue withholding from God or from others. We cannot prosper…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15God had commanded that all stolen goods must be destroyed by fire. Now this command would be carried out, because Achan and everything he owned would be burned with fire. Breaking the covenant of the Lord (the binding agreement between God and his people) was treason (betrayal of loyalty) and a capital offense (a crime punished by death). For example, see Exodus 22:20; Deuteronomy 4:25–27.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 10-1510-15. the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up--The answer of the divine oracle was to this effect: the crisis is owing not to unfaithfulness in Me, but sin in the people. The conditions of the covenant have been violated by the reservation of spoil from the doomed city; wickedness, emphatically called folly, has been committed in Israel (Psa 14:1), and dissimulation, with other aggravations of the crime, continues to be practised. The people are liable to…Read the comment
