Context of Genesis 21:11
9But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian whom she had born to Abraham—making fun. 10So she said to Abraham, “Drive out this female slave and her son, for the son of this female slave will not be an heir with my son—with Isaac.” Now the matter was very displeasing in Abraham’s eyes on account of his son. 12But God said to Abraham, “Do not be displeased about the boy and your slave woman. Whatever Sarah says to you, listen to her voice. For through Isaac shall your seed be called. 13Yet I will also make the son of the slave woman into a nation, because he is your seed.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 Let us not overlook the manner in which this family matter instructs us not to rest in outward privileges, or in our own doings. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-131. the Lord visited Sarah--The language of the historian seems designedly chosen to magnify the power of God as well as His faithfulness to His promise. It was God's grace that brought about that event, as well as the raising of spiritual children to Abraham, of which the birth of this son was typical [Calvin].Read the comment
