Context of Ezekiel 40:20
18And the pavement by the side of the gates was as wide as the length of the gates; was to the lower pavement. 19Then he measured the breadth from the front of the lower gate to the front of the inner court on the other side, an hundred cubits eastward and northward. And the gate of the outer court that looked toward the north, he measured its length, and its breadth. 21And its little chambers were three on this side and three on that side; and its posts and its arches were after the measure of the first gate: its length was fifty cubits, and its breadth five and twenty cubits. 22And their windows, and their arches, and their palm trees, were after the measure of the gate that looketh toward the east; and they went up to it by seven steps; and its arches were before them.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20-27The north gateway and the south gateway are described in similar ways to the east gateway. However, the description gives fewer details than it does for the east gateway. Even so, these gates were strong and impressive structures. Like the east gateway, they served as a powerful defensive barrier. They were meant to prevent any defilement (anything unclean or impure) from entering the sacred area. There was no west gateway to either the outer court or the…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 20-2720-27. The different approaches corresponded in plan. In the case of these two other gates, however, no mention is made of a building with thirty chambers such as was found on the east side. Only one was needed, and it was assigned to the east as being the sacred quarter, and that most conveniently situated for the officiating priests.Read the comment
