Context of Deuteronomy 9:24
22And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth–hattaavah, ye provoked Yhwh to wrath. 23Likewise when Yhwh sent you from Kadesh–barnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of Yhwh your God, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to his voice. Ye have been rebellious against Yhwh from the day that I knew you. 25Thus I fell down before Yhwh forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because Yhwh had said he would destroy you. 26I prayed therefore unto Yhwh, and said, O Lord Yhwh, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

It is good for us often to remember against ourselves, with sorrow and shame, our former sins; that we may see how much we are indebted to free grace, and may humbly own that we never merited any thing but wrath and the curse at God's hand…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 12-2912-29. Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people ... have corrupted themselves--With a view to humble them effectually, Moses proceeds to particularize some of the most atrocious instances of their infidelity. He begins with the impiety of the golden calf--an impiety which, while their miraculous emancipation from Egypt, the most stupendous displays of the Divine Majesty that were exhibited on the adjoining mount, and the recent ratification…Read the comment
