Context of Deuteronomy 12:29
27And thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, upon the altar of Yhwh thy God: and the blood of thy sacrifices shall be poured out upon the altar of Yhwh thy God, and thou shalt eat the flesh. 28Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of Yhwh thy God. When Yhwh thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land; 30Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. 31Thou shalt not do so unto Yhwh thy God: for every abomination to Yhwh, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.

As to moral service, then, as now, men might pray and worship every where, as they did in their synagogues. The place which God would choose, is said to be the place where he would put his name. It was to be his habitation, where, as King of Israel, he would be found by all who reverently sought him. Now, under the…Read the comment

Their Egyptian education had early impressed that bugbear notion of a set of local deities, who expected their dues of all who came to inhabit the country which they honored with their protection, and severely resented the…Read the comment
