Context of Numbers 31:48
46and 16,000 virgin girls. 47From the half-share given to the people, Moses took one of every fifty prisoners and animals and gave them to the Levites, who maintained the Lord’s Tabernacle. All this was done as the Lord had commanded Moses. Then all the generals and captains came to Moses 49and said, “We, your servants, have accounted for all the men who went out to battle under our command; not one of us is missing! 50So we are presenting the items of gold we captured as an offering to the Lord from our share of the plunder—armbands, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces. This will purify our lives before the Lord and make us right with him.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 48-54Verses 48-54 The success of the Israelites had been very remarkable, so small a company overcoming such multitudes, but it was still more wonderful that not one was slain or missing. They presented the gold they found among the spoils, as an offering to the Lord. Thus they confessed, that instead of claiming a reward for their service, they needed forgiveness of much that had been amiss, and desired to be thankful for the preservation of their lives…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 48-49It is unusual for an army to lose no soldiers in battle, but it is not impossible. Ancient writers also described battles in which few or no Roman soldiers were killed. If the Israelites were well prepared and attacked by surprise, and if they had many more soldiers than their enemies, they could have won the battle without losing any men. This would be even more likely because of God’s blessing.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 48-5448-54. officers ... said ... there lacketh not one man of us--A victory so signal, and the glory of which was untarnished by the loss of a single Israelitish soldier, was an astonishing miracle. So clearly betokening the direct interposition of Heaven, it might well awaken the liveliest feelings of grateful acknowledgment to God (Psa 44:2, 3). The oblation they brought for the Lord "was partly an atonement" or reparation for their error (Nu 31:14-16), for…Read the comment
