Context of Exodus 3:6
4When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!” “Here I am!” Moses replied. 5“Do not come any closer,” the Lord warned. “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground. I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” When Moses heard this, he covered his face because he was afraid to look at God. 7Then the Lord told him, “I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their cries of distress because of their harsh slave drivers. Yes, I am aware of their suffering. 8So I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and lead them out of Egypt into their own fertile and spacious land. It is a land flowing with milk and honey—the land where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites now live.

Commentaries on Exodus 3:6
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6I am the God of thy father - Though the word אבי abi, father, is here used in the singular, St Stephen, quoting this place, Acts 7:32, uses the plural, ̔ , The God of thy Fathers; and that this is the meaning the following words prove: The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. These were the fathers of Moses in a direct line. This reading is confirmed by the Samaritan and by the Coptic. Abraham was the father of the Ishmaelites, and with…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Our Saviour adduces this passage as a proof that the doctrine of the Resurrection was taught in the Old Testament Matthew 22:32, and He calls this book “the Book of Moses” Mark 12:26, two points to be borne in mind by readers of the Pentateuch.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6This transcendent God (the God who is above and beyond creation) had made a faithful promise to the ancestors of Moses. Later, Jesus quoted this verse when he spoke with the Sadducees about the resurrection (Matthew 22:32; Mark 12:26; Luke 20:37).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-86-8. Moreover, the time, as well as all the circumstances of this miraculous appearance, were such as to give him an illustrious display of God's faithfulness to His promises. The period of Israel's journey and affliction in Egypt had…Read the comment
