Context of 2 Chronicles 21:11
9So Jehoram went out with his full army and all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he went out at night and attacked them under cover of darkness. 10Even so, Edom has been independent from Judah to this day. The town of Libnah also revolted about that same time. All this happened because Jehoram had abandoned the Lord, the God of his ancestors. He had built pagan shrines in the hill country of Judah and had led the people of Jerusalem and Judah to give themselves to pagan gods and to go astray. 12Then Elijah the prophet wrote Jehoram this letter: “This is what the Lord, the God of your ancestor David, says: You have not followed the good example of your father, Jehoshaphat, or your grandfather King Asa of Judah. 13Instead, you have been as evil as the kings of Israel. You have led the people of Jerusalem and Judah to worship idols, just as King Ahab did in Israel. And you have even killed your own brothers, men who were better than you.

Commentaries on 2 Chronicles 21:11
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11To commit fornication - That is, to serve idols. The Israelites were considered as joined to Jehovah as a woman is joined to her husband: when she associates with other men, this is adultery; when they served other gods, this was called by the same name, it was adultery against Jehovah. This is frequently the only meaning of the terms adultery and fornication in the Scriptures.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11See 2 Kings 8:18. The writer of Kings only tells us in general terms that Jehoram “did evil in the sight of the Lord,” and “walked in the way of the house of Ahab.” Here, in 2 Chronicles 21:11, 2 Chronicles 21:13, we have particulars of his idolatry. Jehoram, it seems, seduced by the evil influence of his wife - Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab - permitted the introduction of Baal-worship, idolatrous altars in various high places, groves (Asherahs), images…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-11Jehoram's disobedience led to the loss of what Asa and Jehoshaphat had achieved. Edom has been in rebellion: During Solomon's reign, controlling Edom allowed Israel to access rich Arabian trade. The Edomites had also rebelled before Solomon's death (1 Kings 11:14–22) and were likely not under Rehoboam's control. They seemed to come under Judah's control again after Jehoshaphat defeated them (2 Chronicles 20:1–30; compare 1 Kings 22:47). The town of Libnah…Read the comment
