Context of 1 Kings 11:19
17that Hadad fled to go to Egypt, he and certain Edomites of his father’s servants with him. Hadad was still a little child. 18Then they arose from Midian and came to Paran; and they took men with them from Paran and came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house, apportioned food for him, and gave him land. And Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him as wife the sister of his own wife, that is, the sister of Queen Tahpenes. 20Then the sister of Tahpenes bore him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh’s house. And Genubath was in Pharaoh’s household among the sons of Pharaoh. 21So when Hadad heard in Egypt that David rested with his fathers, and that Joab the commander of the army was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Let me depart, that I may go to my own country.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-25Verses 14-25 While Solomon kept close to God and to his duty, there was no enemy to give him uneasiness; but here we have an account of two. If against us, he can make us fear even the least, and the very grasshopper shall be a burden. Though they were moved by principles of ambition or revenge, God used them to correct Solomon.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-22Solomon's first enemy was Hadad. David had fought the Edomites and defeated them severely (2 Samuel 8:13–14; 1 Chronicles 18:13Œ14). Hadad was the only survivor from the Edomite royal family. He escaped to Egypt with some followers. The Egyptian king welcomed him as a possible ally and gave him his wife's sister to marry. When David and Joab died, Hadad returned to Edom, waiting for a chance to strike back at Israel.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 14-2514-25. the Lord stirred up an adversary--that is, permitted him, through the impulse of his own ambition, or revenge, to attack Israel. During the war of extermination, which Joab carried on in Edom (2Sa 8:13), this Hadad, of the royal family, a mere boy when rescued from the sword of the ruthless conqueror, was carried into Egypt, hospitably entertained, and became allied with the house of the Egyptian king. In after years, the thought of his native land…Read the comment
