Context of Numbers 26:63
61But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered strange fire before the Lord. 62Those of them who were numbered were 23,000, all males from a month old and upward, for they were not numbered among the Israelites; no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites. These are those who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the Israelites in the plains of Moab along the Jordan River opposite Jericho. 64But there was not a man among these who had been among those numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they numbered the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai. 65For the Lord had said of them, “They will surely die in the wilderness.” And there was not left a single man of them, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Commentaries on Numbers 26:63
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 63-65Verses 63-65 The execution of the sentence passed on the murmurers, chap. 14:29, is observable. There was not one man numbered now, who was numbered then, but Caleb and Joshua. Here appeared the righteousness of God, and his faithfulness to his threatenings. Especially observe the truth of God, in performing his promise to Caleb and Joshua. Death makes awful havoc of the human species, and causes surprising changes in families and nations; yet all is…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 63-65The numbers in this second registration describe a completely new generation of Hebrews. Everyone who had left Egypt had died in the wilderness except Caleb and Joshua. Joshua became the leader of Israel after Moses (27:12–23; see “Joshua” Profile). Caleb also later played an important role in Israel’s history (see “Caleb” Profile). Numbers 26 shows an important change. The earlier generation had lived under God’s judgment because of their unbelief…Read the comment
