Context of Leviticus 6:13
11Then he must take off his clothes and put on other clothes, and he must bring the fatty ashes outside the camp to a ceremonially clean place, 12but the fire which is on the altar must be kept burning on it. It must not be extinguished. So the priest must kindle wood on it morning by morning, and he must arrange the burnt offering on it and offer the fat of the peace offering up in smoke on it. A continual fire must be kept burning on the altar. It must not be extinguished. 14“‘This is the law of the grain offering. The sons of Aaron are to present it before the Lord in front of the altar, 15and the priest must take up with his hand some of the choice wheat flour of the grain offering and some of its olive oil, and all of the frankincense that is on the grain offering, and he must offer its memorial portion up in smoke on the altar as a soothing aroma to the Lord.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13The fire shall ever be burning - See on Leviticus 6:9; (note) and Leviticus 6:20; (note). In imitation of this perpetual fire, the ancient Persian Magi, and their descendants the Parses, kept up a perpetual fire; the latter continue it to the present day. This is strictly enjoined in the Zend Avesta, which is a code of laws as sacred among them as the Pentateuch is among the Jews. A Sagnika Brahmin preserves the fire that was kindled at his investiture…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13The fire shall ever be burning - This was a symbol of the never-ceasing worship which Yahweh required of His people. It was essentially connected with their acts of sacrifice.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-13Verses 8-13 The daily sacrifice of a lamb is chiefly referred to. The priest must take care of the fire upon the altar. The first fire upon the altar came from heaven, ch. 9:24; by keeping that up continually, all their sacrifices might be said to be consumed with the fire from heaven, in token of God's acceptance. Thus should the fire of our holy affections, the exercise of our faith and love, of prayer and praise, be without ceasing.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-13This passage warns that the fire on the bronze altar must always remain tended and never allowed to go out. This may anticipate the tragedy of the "unauthorized fire" offered by Nadab and Abihu (Leviticus 10:1–2).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 8-139. Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This ... law of the burnt offering--In this passage Moses received instructions to be delivered to the priests respecting their official duties, and first the burnt offering--Hebrew, "a sacrifice, which went up in smoke." The daily service consisted of two lambs, one offered in the morning at sunrise, the other in the evening, when the day began to decline. Both of them were consumed on the altar by means of a slow…Read the comment
