Context of Joshua 7:20
18He then made Zabdi’s family approach man by man and Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was selected. 19So Joshua said to Achan, “My son, honor the Lord God of Israel and give him praise! Tell me what you did; don’t hide anything from me!” Achan told Joshua, “It is true. I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel in this way: 21I saw among the goods we seized a nice robe from Babylon, two hundred silver pieces, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels. I wanted them, so I took them. They are hidden in the ground right in the middle of my tent with the silver underneath.” 22Joshua sent messengers who ran to the tent. The things were hidden right in his tent, with the silver underneath.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20I have sinned against the Lord God - This seems a very honest and hearty confession, and there is hope that this poor culprit escaped perdition.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-26Verses 16-26 See the folly of those that promise themselves secrecy in sin. The righteous God has many ways of bringing to light the hidden works of darkness. See also, how much it is our concern, when God is contending with us, to find out the cause that troubles us. We must pray with holy Job, Lord, show me wherefore thou contendest with me. Achan's sin began in the eye. He saw these fine things, as Eve saw the forbidden fruit. See what comes of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-20My son: This gentle and compassionate way of speaking shows Joshua as a caring leader. He felt sorrow for this young man, who was trapped by impulsive greed. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2-262. Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai--After the sacking of Jericho, the next step was to penetrate into the hills above.
