Context of Jeremiah 5:14
12“These people have denied what the Lord says. They have said, ‘That is not so! No harm will come to us. We will not experience war and famine. 13The prophets will prove to be full of wind. The Lord has not spoken through them. So, let what they say happen to them.’” Because of that, the Lord, the God who rules over all, said to me, “Because these people have spoken like this, I will make the words that I put in your mouth like fire. And I will make this people like wood which the fiery judgments you speak will burn up.” 15The Lord says, “Listen, nation of Israel! I am about to bring a nation from far away to attack you. It will be a nation that was founded long ago and has lasted for a long time. It will be a nation whose language you will not know. Its people will speak words that you will not be able to understand. 16All of its soldiers are strong and mighty. Their arrows will send you to your grave.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Because ye speak this word - Because ye thus treat my message, "I will make my words in thy mouth fire." They have said they are but air; but I will make them fire, and a fire too that shall devour them. And how this was to be done, and by whom, is mentioned in the next verse.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-18Verses 10-18 Multitudes are ruined by believing that God will not be so strict as his word says he will; by this artifice Satan undid mankind. Sinners are not willing to own any thing to be God's word, that tends to part them from, or to disquiet them in, their sins. Mocking and misusing the Lord's messengers, filled the measure of their iniquity. God can bring trouble upon us from places and causes very remote. He has mercy in store for his people…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1414. ye ... thy ... this people--He turns away from addressing the people to the prophet; implying that He puts them to a distance from Him, and only communicates with them through His prophet (Jr 5:19). fire ... wood--Thy denunciations of judgments shall be fulfilled and shall consume them as fire does wood. In Jr 23:29 it is the penetrating energy of fire which is the point of comparison.Read the comment
