Context of Deuteronomy 2:5
3“You have circled around this mountain long enough; now turn north. 4Instruct these people as follows: ‘You are about to cross the border of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who inhabit Seir. They will be afraid of you, so watch yourselves carefully. Do not be hostile toward them, because I am not giving you any of their land, not even a footprint, for I have given Mount Seir as an inheritance for Esau. 6You may purchase food to eat and water to drink from them. 7All along the way I, the Lord your God, have blessed your every effort. I have been attentive to your travels through this great wasteland. These forty years I have been with you; you have lacked for nothing.’”

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5I have given: God's gift of a promised land was not only for Israel. He also gave lands to Edom, Moab, Ammon, and the Caphtorites (2:9; 2:19; 2:22–23). God chose Israel as a special nation (1:31; see also 7:6; 14:2; Exodus 19:5). Yet, he is the God of all nations and has a place and purpose for each one (Deuteronomy 32:8; Acts 17:26). But the people of Edom were not to be injured, either in their persons or property.
