Context of Jeremiah 13:22
20Look up, and see those who are coming from the north. Where is the flock that was given to you—your beautiful sheep? 21What will you say when God makes the people you thought were your friends your new masters? Won’t pain grip you like a woman in labor? If you ask yourself, “Why do these things happen to me?” it’s because you have so many sins. Your clothes have been torn off and your limbs are bare. 23Can Ethiopians change the color of their skin or leopards change their spots? Can you do good when you’re taught to do wrong? 24“I will scatter you like straw that is blown away by a desert wind.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22Are thy skirts discovered - Thy defenseless state is every where known; thou art not only weak, but ignominiously so. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22Made bare - Rather, “ill-used, treated with violence.” The long flowing robes worn by ladies of rank, are to be laid aside, that they might do menial work, bare-legged, like slaves. The ill-usage to the heels is the having to tramp barefoot, a thing very painful to women accustomed to the seclusion of the female apartments.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-27Verses 18-27 Here is a message sent to king Jehoiakim, and his queen. Their sorrows would be great indeed. Do they ask, Wherefore come these things upon us? Let them know, it is for their obstinacy in sin. We cannot alter the natural colour of the skin; and so is it morally impossible to reclaim and reform these people. Sin is the blackness of the soul; it is the discolouring of it; we were shapen in it, so that we cannot get clear of it by any power of…Read the comment
