Context of Jeremiah 13:19
17If you won’t listen, I will cry secretly over your arrogance. I will cry bitterly, and my eyes will flow with tears because the Lord’s flock will be taken captive. 18Say to the king and his mother, “Come down from your thrones, because your crowns have fallen off your heads.” The cities in the Negev will be locked up, and there will be no one to reopen them. All the people of Judah will be taken away into captivity. 20Look up, and see those who are coming from the north. Where is the flock that was given to you—your beautiful sheep? 21What will you say when God makes the people you thought were your friends your new masters? Won’t pain grip you like a woman in labor?

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19The cities of the south shall be shut up - Not only the cities of the north, the quarter at which the Chaldeans entered, but the cities of the south also; for he shall proceed from one extremity of the land to the other, spreading devastation every where, and carrying off the inhabitants.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19Shall be shut up - Rather, “are shut up, and no man openeth them.” The cities of the Negeb, the southern district of Judah, are blockaded, with no one to raise the siege. The captivity was the inevitable result of the capture of the fortified towns. An army entering from the north would march along the Shefelah, or fertile plain near the seacoast, and would capture the outlying cities, before it attacked Jerusalem, almost inaccessible among the mountains…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-27Verses 18-27 Here is a message sent to king Jehoiakim, and his queen. Their sorrows would be great indeed. Do they ask, Wherefore come these things upon us? Let them know, it is for their obstinacy in sin. We cannot alter the natural colour of the skin; and so is it morally impossible to reclaim and reform these people. Sin is the blackness of the soul; it is the discolouring of it; we were shapen in it, so that we cannot get clear of it by any power of…Read the comment

Jehoiachin was eighteen years old and ruled for only three months. This message was probably given during his brief reign. The Babylonians would soon take his crowns (see 2 Kings 24:11–16). They would also seize the treasures of the Temple and palace. The royalty and elite of Judah would be taken into exile…Read the comment
