Context of Isaiah 21:6
4I’m confused. I’m shaking with terror. The twilight hours I longed for make me tremble. 5Set the table. Spread the rugs ⌞by the table⌟. Eat. Drink. Get up, you leaders! Prepare your shields for battle! This is what the Lord says to me: Post a watchman. Have him report whatever he sees. 7He will see chariots, pairs of horsemen, riders on donkeys, and riders on camels. Let him watch carefully, very carefully. 8The watchman called, “Sir, I stand on the watchtower every day. Every night, I stand guard at my post.

Commentaries on Isaiah 21:6
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Go, set a watchman - This was said to Isaiah in the vision. He represents himself as in Babylon, and as hearing God command him to set a watchman on the watch-tower who would announce what was to come to pass. All this is designed merely to bring the manner of the destruction of the city more vividly before the eye.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 66. Go, set a watchman, let him declare what he seeth--God's direction to Isaiah to set a watchman to "declare" what he sees. But as in Is 21:10, Isaiah himself is represented as the one who "declared." Horsley makes him the "watchman," and translates, "Come, let him who standeth on the watchtower report what he seeth."Read the comment
