Context of Genesis 26:29

27Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you hate me and sent me away from you?” 28They answered, “We have seen that the Lord is with you. So we thought, ‘There should be a solemn agreement between us.’ We’d like to make an agreement with you that you will not harm us, since we have not touched you. We have done only good to you and let you go in peace. Now you are blessed by the Lord.” 30Isaac prepared a special dinner for them, and they ate and drank. 31Early the next morning they exchanged oaths. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they left peacefully.

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-33Verses 26-33 When a man's ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him, Pr 16:7. Kings' hearts are in his hands, and when he pleases, he can turn them to favour his people. It is not wrong to stand upon our guard in dealing with those who have acted unfairly. But Isaac did not insist on the unkindnesses they had done him; he freely entered into friendship with them. Religion teaches us to be neighbourly, and, as much as in us…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 26-33This oath is like the one a previous king made with Abraham (see 21:22–31). This king acknowledged that God was blessing Isaac. He understood that an oath with Isaac would be beneficial. No opposition can stop God's blessing. It will flourish, and other nations will notice it. They will seek peace with God's people to share in the blessing.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 26-3326-33. Then Abimelech went to him--As there was a lapse of ninety years between the visit of Abraham and of Isaac, the Abimelech and Phichol spoken of must have been different persons' official titles. Here is another proof of the promise (Ge 12:2) being fulfilled, in an overture of peace being made to him by the king of Gerar. By whatever motive the proposal was dictated--whether fear of his growing power, or regret for the bad usage they had given him…Read the comment
