Context of Numbers 8:4
2‘Speak to Aaron and say to him, “When you put the lamps on the lampstand, the seven lamps must give light in front of the lampstand.” ’ 3So Aaron did that. He put its lamps at the front of the lampstand, as the Lord had said to Moses. A worker had made the lampstand from one piece of gold that he had made flat with a hammer. From its base to the flowers at the top, he had made it in that way. It was completely like the lampstand that the Lord had shown to Moses. 5Again the Lord spoke to Moses and he said, 6‘Take the Levites from among the Israelites and make them clean.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4This work of the candlestick, etc. - See many curious particulars relative to this candlestick, See the note on Exodus 25:31; and Exodus 25:39; (note). The candlestick itself was an emblem of the Church of Christ; the oil, of the graces and gifts of the Spirit of God; and the light, of those gifts and graces in action among men. See Revelation 1:12-20. God builds his Church and sends forth his Spirit to dwell in it, to sanctify and cleanse it, that it may…Read the comment

The light from the lampstand helped the priests carry out their duties.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-41. the Lord spake unto Moses--The order of this chapter suggests the idea that the following instructions were given to Moses while he was within the tabernacle of the congregation, after the princes had completed their offering. But from the tenor of the instructions, it is more likely that they were given immediately after the Levites had been given to the priests (see on Nu 3:1-4:49), and that the record of these instructions had been postponed till…Read the comment
