Context of Numbers 7:87
85Each plate weighed 130 shekels and each bowl weighed 70 shekels. All the silver weighed 2,400 shekels. That was the shekel of God's Holy Tent. 86They brought 12 small dishes that people had made from gold. Each small dish weighed ten shekels. They were each full of incense. All the gold weighed 120 shekels. All the animals for the burnt offering were 12 young bulls, 12 male sheep and 12 male lambs that were one year old. They also brought the proper grain offerings with those animals. And they brought 12 male goats for a sin offering. 88There were also another 24 oxen, 60 male sheep, 60 male goats and 60 male lambs. The male lambs were one year old. Those animals were for the friendship offering. That was the offering when they made the altar special for God. That was after Moses had poured special oil on it. 89When Moses went into the Tent of Meeting, to speak with the Lord, the Lord did speak to him. And Moses heard the Lord. The sound came from above the lid which was on the top of the Covenant Box. On the lid, there were images of two cherubs. The sound came from between the cherubs. That was how the Lord spoke to Moses.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 84-88Verses 84-88 The aggregate worth, by weight, of the whole of the offerings was about 438 British pounds: But the real worth of such a sum, when measured by the prices of clothing and food at that time, must have been vastly greater.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-89Verses 10-89 The princes and great men were most forward in the service of God. Here is an example to those in authority, and of the highest rank; they ought to use their honour and power, their estate and interest, to promote religion and the service of God in the places where they live. Though it was a time of joy and rejoicing, yet still, in the midst of their sacrifices, we find a sin-offering. As, in our best services, we are conscious that there is…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 84-88This paragraph first summarizes the gifts and offerings from each tribe. Then it lists expensive containers, offerings, incense, and sacrificial animals. These large and costly gifts showed the importance of the altar, the tabernacle, and the God who was served there. The law required these sacrifices, but the Hebrews gave the special gifts generously.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 84-8884-88. This was the dedication of the altar--The inspired historian here sums up the separate items detailed in the preceding narrative, and the aggregate amount is as follows: 12 silver chargers, each weighing 130 shekels equals 1560; 12 silver bowls, each 70 shekels equals 840: total weight. A silver charger at 130 shekels, reduced to troy weight, made 75 ounces, 9 pennyweights, 168.31 grains; and a silver bowl at 70 shekels amounts to 40 ounces, 12…Read the comment
