Context of Numbers 4:23
21Then the Lord said to Moses, 22‘Also write a list of the people in Gershon's clan in their families. Record the men who can work in the Tent of Meeting. Record them if they are between 30 and 50 years old. 24The work of the men in Gershon's clan is to carry everything. 25The men from that clan must carry the curtains of God's Tent. And they must carry the Tent of Meeting with the thing that covers it. And they must carry the good leather that covers all that. And they must carry the curtain for the place where people go into the Tent of Meeting.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 23enter in to perform the service - literally, as in the margin, “to war the warfare,” or, as the same phrase in part is rendered, Numbers 4:3, “enter into the host to do the work.” The language is military. The service of God is a sacred warfare (Numbers 8:24-25 marginal reading).Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-33Verses 21-33 We have here the charge of the other two families of the Levites, which, though not so honourable as the first, yet was necessary, and to be done regularly. All the things were delivered them by name. It intimates the care God takes of his church and every member of it. The death of the saints is represented as the taking down of the tabernacle, 2Co 5:1, and the putting it off, 2Pe 1:14. All shall be raised up in the great day, when these…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21-28The men of the Gershonite clan (see 3:21–26) were responsible for general service and carrying loads (4:24). They handled the curtains, coverings, ropes, and related equipment. These were less central to Israel's worship. The duties of the Gershonites focused on the Tent of Meeting in general. This was unlike the Kohathites, who were responsible for the holy objects of the inner place of worship.Read the comment
