Context of Numbers 10:28
26And Pagiel the son of Ocran was over the army of the tribe of Asher. 27And Ahira the son of Enan was over the army of the tribe of Naphtali. The Israelites marched out like that every time that they started to travel. 29Moses spoke to Reuel's son, Hobab. He was the brother of Moses' wife. He was a Midianite. Moses said to Hobab, ‘We are leaving here now to go to another place. The Lord has said to us, “I will give that place to you.” The Lord has promised to help Israel's people with good things. So come with us and we will take care of you.’ 30But Hobab said to him, ‘I will not come. Instead, I will return to my own country and to my family there.’

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-28Verses 11-28 After the Israelites had continued nearly a year at mount Sinai, and all was settled respecting their future worship, they began their march to Canaan. True religion begins with the knowledge of the holy law of God, and humiliation for sin, but we must go on towards perfection, in acquaintance with Christ and his gospel, and those effectual encouragements, motives, and assistances to holiness, which it proposes. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13-28The order of march described here is different from 2:3–34. There, all three Levitical clans carried the tabernacle and its furnishings in the center of the camp. The Gershonites and Merarites carried the structural parts of the tabernacle between Judah and Reuben. The Kohathites carried the most sacred…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-362. Make thee two trumpets of silver--These trumpets were of a long form, in opposition to that of the Egyptian trumpets, with which the people were convened to the worship of Osiris and which were curved like rams' horns. Those which Moses made, as described by Josephus and represented on the arch of Titus, were straight, a cubit or more in length, the tubes of the thickness of a flute. Both extremities bore a close resemblance to those in use among us…Read the comment
