Context of Leviticus 4:3
1The Lord said to Moses, 2‘Say to Israel's people, “A man may sin, when he did not really want to sin against the Lord. This is what that person must do. The man may be a priest that you have anointed. If that is true, his sins will cause the people to sin. He must bring a young bull as a gift to the Lord. 4The priest must bring the young bull to the door of the Lord's Tent of Meeting. He must put his hand on the animal's head. And then he must kill it in front of the Lord. 5The priest that you have anointed must carry some of the blood into the Tent of Meeting.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3If the priest that is anointed - Meaning, most probably, the high priest. According to the sin of the people; for although he had greater advantages than the people could have, in being more conversant with the law of God, and his lips should understand and preserve knowledge, yet it was possible even for him, in that time in which the word of God had not been fully revealed, to transgress through ignorance; and his transgression might have the very worst…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3The priest that is anointed - i. e. the high priest. (Compare Leviticus 8:12; Leviticus 21:10; Exodus 29:7). On the anointing of the other priests see the note at Leviticus 8:13. The graduation of the sin-offerings is remarkable. According to the sin of the people - Rather, to bring guilt on the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3God chose the high priest for a special role and they anointed him. The Hebrew word for "anoint" is mashiakh. It means "set apart by the ritual of anointing." In 1 Samuel 1:1—2 Kings 25:30, anointing usually refers to Israel's king (see 1 Samuel 24:6; 2 Samuel 1:14; 19:21). They would anoint all priests (Exodus 40:13–15). Yet, here the term probably refers to the high priest because they specially anointed him for service in the tabernacle (Leviticus…Read the comment

He is the person principally meant, though the common order of…Read the comment
