Context of Jeremiah 26:7
5You must listen to the messages that my servants the prophets tell you. I have sent them to speak to you many times, but you have not listened to them. 6So if you do not obey me, I will destroy this temple, as I destroyed Shiloh. People of all the other nations on earth will use the name of this city as a curse.” ’ The priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah's message in the Lord's temple. 8Jeremiah said everything that the Lord had commanded him to say to all the people. Just as he finished, some of the priests, the prophets, and the people took hold of him. They shouted, ‘You deserve to die! 9You should not say that you have the Lord's authority to prophesy such terrible things! You cannot say that this temple will become like Shiloh. You cannot say that this city will become a heap of stones where nobody lives!’ The whole crowd of people pushed together around Jeremiah in the yard of the temple.

Commentaries on Jeremiah 26:7
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-15Verses 7-15 The priests and prophets charged Jeremiah as deserving death, and bore false witness against him. The elders of Israel came to inquire into this matter. Jeremiah declares that the Lord sent him to prophesy thus. As long as ministers keep close to the word they have from God, they need not fear. And those are very unjust who complain of ministers for preaching of hell and damnation; for it is from a desire to bring them to heaven and salvation…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-9The crowd at the Temple wanted to kill Jeremiah for blasphemy because he spoke against the Temple. This charge carried the death penalty (Leviticus 24:16). The prophet's opponents argued that the Lord's holy Temple could not be destroyed. The priests and prophets believed the pagan idea that temples were indestructible because gods lived in them.Read the comment
