Context of Jeremiah 21:13
11This is the Lord's message to the king of Judah, to his family and his officers: 12‘Descendants of King David, the Lord says this to you: Every day you must be fair as you judge people. Punish those who rob other people. Punish those who are cruel to other people. Help the people that they have hurt. If you do not do judge in a fair way, I will be very angry. My anger will burn like a hot fire that nobody can stop. It will destroy you because of the evil things that you have done.’ The Lord says: ‘I have turned against you, Jerusalem's palace. Kings sit there on their thrones, on a high rock above the valley. You say, “We are safe here in our strong building. No enemy can get in here to attack us.” 14But I will punish you for everything that you have done. I will destroy your palace with fire. That fire will destroy everything that is around you.’ That is what the Lord says.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13O inhabitant of the valley, and rock of the plain - Dr. Blayney translates: "O thou inhabitant of the levelled hollow of a rock." With all his explanation I cannot see the good sense of this translation. Jerusalem itself, though partly on two hills, was also extended in the valley; and Zion, the city of David, was properly a rock, strongly fortified both by nature and art; and by its ancient possessors, the Jebusites, was deemed impregnable. Who shall…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13Inhabitant - is feminine, the population of Jerusalem being always personified as a woman, the daughter of Zion. Omit and. Jerusalem is at once a valley and a rock Jeremiah 17:3. The people are described as priding themselves on the impregnability of their city.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-14Verses 11-14 The wickedness of the king and his family was the worse because of their relation to David. They were urged to act with justice, at once, lest the Lord's anger should be unquenchable. If God be for us, who can be against us? But if he be against us, who can do any thing for us?Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13-14The people in Jerusalem trusted completely in the city's strong fortress, believing it was unbeatable (see 2 Kings 18:35–37; 2 Chronicles 32:20–23; Isaiah 37:36–38). The Lord had protected the city before, but now the Lord opposed it. I will kindle a fire in your forest: See Isaiah 6:13.Read the comment

The "valley" between Mount Zion and Moriah is…Read the comment
