Context of Jeremiah 1:10
8Do not be afraid of them. Remember that I will be with you. I will keep you safe.’ 9Then the Lord touched my mouth with his hand. He said to me, ‘I am giving you the words that you must speak. Look! I give you authority to tell nations and kingdoms what will happen to them. You will pull some of them out of the ground, like a plant and its roots. You will knock down and destroy some of them. You will bring an end to their power. But you will build up other nations and make them strong.’ 11The Lord asked me, ‘What do you see, Jeremiah?’ I replied, ‘I see the branch of an almond tree.’ 12The Lord said, ‘Yes, that is correct. I am watching carefully to make sure that what I say will happen really happens.’

Commentaries on Jeremiah 1:10
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10I have - set thee over the nations - God represents his messengers the prophets as doing what he commanded them to declare should be done. In this sense they rooted up, pulled down, and destroyed - declared God's judgments, they builder up and planted - declared the promises of his mercy. Thus God says to Isaiah, Isaiah 6:10; : "Make the heart of this people fat - and shut their eyes." Show them that they are stupid and blind; and that, because they have…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10I have set thee over - literally, I have made thee Pakeed, i. e., deputy. This title is given only to these invested with high authority (e. g. Genesis 41:34; 2 Chronicles 24:11; Jeremiah 20:1; Jeremiah 29:26). From God‘s side, the prophet is a mere messenger, speaking what he is told, doing what he is commanded. From man‘s side, he is God‘s vicegerent, with power “to root out, and to pull down.” Root out pull down - In the Hebrew, the verbs present…Read the comment
