1After these things, Ezra came to Jerusalem from Babylon. This happened while Artaxerxes was king of Persia. This is the list of Ezra's ancestors: He was the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah. 2Hilkiah was the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub. Ahitub was the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth. 4Meraioth was the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki. 5Bukki was the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar. Eleazar was a son of Aaron, the leader of the priests.

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-5Ezra highlights his authority by listing his genealogy (record of ancestors). He traces his family line through Zadok, who served as priest under Solomon, and back to Aaron, the high priest and brother of Moses (1 Kings 2:35). This genealogy is clearly shortened. It includes only 16 generations from Aaron to about eighty years after the exile, while 1 Chronicles 6:3–15 lists 23 generations from Aaron to the exile in Babylon.Read the comment
