Context of Ezekiel 12:21
19Then say to the people of Israel, “This is what the Almighty Lord says about the people who live in Jerusalem and in all the land of Israel: They will be afraid while they eat their food. They will shake with fear when they drink their water. An enemy will destroy their land so that nothing remains in it. This will happen because all the people who live there have done violent things. 20The towns where people live will become heaps of stones. An enemy will destroy the whole land. Then you will know that I am the Lord.” ’ The Lord gave this message to me: 22‘Son of man, you have this proverb in the land of Israel: “A long time passes and visions never truly happen.” 23But you must say to them, “This is what the Almighty Lord says: I will soon stop you from saying the words of that proverb.” Instead, say to them “The time will soon be here when every vision will truly happen.

Then men persuade themselves that if the prophecy be true it respects some distant time, and that the men of the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-28Verses 21-28 From that forbearance of God, which should have led them to repent, the Jews hardened themselves in sin. It will not serve for an excuse in speaking evil, to plead that it is a common saying. There is but a step between us and an awful eternity; therefore it concerns us to get ready for a future state. No one will be able to put from himself the evil day, unless by seeking peace with the Lord.Read the comment

Ezekiel needed often to be reminded of the people's perversity, lest he should be discouraged by the little effect produced by his prophecies. Their "not seeing" is the result of perversity, not incapacity. They are wilfully blind. The persons most interested in this prophecy were those dwelling at Jerusalem…Read the comment
