Context of Exodus 28:23
21There will be 12 jewels, one jewel for each of Israel's sons. You must carefully write one tribe's name on each jewel with a sharp tool. 22Use pure gold to make two thin chains like strings. These will fix the breastpiece to the ephod. Make two gold rings and fix them to the two top corners of the breastpiece. 24Fix the two gold chains to the two rings on the corners of the breastpiece. 25Fix the other ends of the two chains to the shoulder pieces of the ephod, in the front. Join them to the gold pieces that hold the onyx stones.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15-30The breastpiece receives more attention than any other item. This suggests the breastpiece was very important. The breastpiece symbolized the priest's representation of Israel (28:17–21, 29). It held the Urim and Thummim, objects through which God revealed his will (28:30). The high priest had two main tasks. First, he brought the people to God. He represented them before the Lord. Second, he brought God’s word to the people. He spoke to them on God’s…Read the comment
