Context of 2 Samuel 12:7
5When David heard what the rich man had done, he became very angry. He said to Nathan, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, that man deserves to die. 6He did that cruel thing and he was not sorry for the poor man. So he must pay the poor man enough money to buy four lambs.’ Then Nathan said to David, ‘You are that man! This is what the Lord, Israel's God, says: “I chose you as king to rule over Israel. I saved you from Saul's power. 8I gave your master's palace to you, and his wives as well. I gave the kingdoms of Israel and Judah to you. And if that was not enough for you, I would have given you even more than that. 9But now you have not respected the Lord's command. You have done an evil thing. You caused Uriah the Hittite to die in a battle. You used the Ammonite soldiers to kill Uriah.

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 12:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Thou art the man - What a terrible word! And by it David appears to have been transfixed, and brought into the dust before the messenger of God. Thou Art this son of death, and thou shalt restore this lamb Fourfold. It is indulging fancy too much to say David was called, in the course of a just Providence to pay this fourfold debt? to lose four sons by untimely deaths, viz., this son of Bath-sheba, on whom David had set his heart, was slain by the Lord…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-8You are that man!: David did deserve to die for his crime (Leviticus 20:10). I anointed … I gave … I would have given you: David's sin broke God's laws against murder, adultery, and coveting (Exodus 20:1–17). It also showed a bold disrespect for everything the Lord had kindly given him.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. Nathan said to David, Thou art the man--These awful words pierced his heart, aroused his conscience, and brought him to his knees. The sincerity and depth of his penitent sorrow are evinced by the Psalms he composed (Psa 32:1-11; 51:1-19; 103:1-22). He was pardoned, so far as related to the restoration of the divine favor. But as from his high character for piety, and his eminent rank in society, his deplorable fall was calculated to do great injury to…Read the comment
