Context of Leviticus 7:16
14From the cakes he is to present one portion of each offering as a contribution to the Lord. It will belong to the priest who splatters the blood of the fellowship offering; it is his. 15The meat of his thanksgiving sacrifice of fellowship must be eaten on the day he offers it; he may not leave any of it until morning. “If the sacrifice he offers is a vow or a freewill offering, it is to be eaten on the day he presents his sacrifice, and what is left over may be eaten on the next day. 17But what remains of the sacrificial meat by the third day must be burned. 18If any of the meat of his fellowship sacrifice is eaten on the third day, it will not be accepted. It will not be credited to the one who presents it; it is repulsive. The person who eats any of it will bear his iniquity.

Commentaries on Leviticus 7:16
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16The vow-offering appears to have been a peace-offering vowed upon a certain condition; the voluntary-offering, one offered as the simple tribute of a devout heart rejoicing in peace with God and man offered on no external occasion (compare Leviticus 22:17-25).Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-27Verses 11-27 As to the peace-offerings, in the expression of their sense of mercy, God left them more at liberty, than in the expression of their sense of sin; that their sacrifices, being free-will offerings, might be the more acceptable, while, by obliging them to bring the sacrifices of atonement, God shows the necessity of the great Propitiation. The main reason why blood was forbidden of old, was because the Lord had appointed blood for an atonement…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16-18Worshipers presented the "peace offering of thanksgiving" to show gratitude to the Lord (Leviticus 7:12–15). This was unlike the vow offering linked to a promise made by a worshiper. After, they celebrated with a meal. The meal was less formal and could continue into the next day. But since the vow offering involved a promise to God, it had stricter rules than the voluntary offering, which could even use a deformed animal (22:23).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 15-1715-17. the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings ... shall be eaten the same day that it is offered--The flesh of the sacrifices was eaten on the day of the offering or on the day following. But if any part of it remained till the third day, it was, instead of being made use of, to be burned with fire. In the East, butcher-meat is generally eaten the day it is killed, and it is rarely kept a second day, so that as a prohibition was issued against…Read the comment
