Context of Joshua 13:30
28This was the inheritance of the Gadites by their clans, with the cities and their settlements. 29And to half the tribe of Manasseh (that is, to half the tribe of Manasseh’s descendants by their clans) Moses gave this as their territory: From Mahanaim through all Bashan — all the kingdom of King Og of Bashan, including all of Jair’s Villages that are in Bashan — sixty cities. 31But half of Gilead, and Og’s royal cities in Bashan — Ashtaroth and Edrei — are for the descendants of Machir son of Manasseh (that is, half the descendants of Machir by their clans). 32These were the portions Moses gave them on the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan east of Jericho.

Jair was son of Segub, grandson of Esron or Hezron, and great-grandson of Machir by his grandmother's side, who married Hezron of the tribe of Judah. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-33Verses 7-33 The land must be divided among the tribes. It is the will of God that every man should know his own, and not take that which is another's. The world must be governed, not by force, but right. Wherever our habitation is placed, and in whatever honest way our portion is assigned, we should consider them as allotted of God; we should be thankful for, and use them as such, while every prudent method should be used to prevent disputes about…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-331. Now Joshua was old and stricken in years--He was probably above a hundred years old; for the conquest and survey of the land occupied about seven years, the partition one; and he died at the age of one hundred ten years (Jos 24:29). The distribution, as well as the conquest of the land, was included in the mission of Joshua; and his advanced age supplied a special reason for entering on the immediate discharge of that duty; namely, of allocating Canaan…Read the comment
