Context of Jeremiah 32:31
29The Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will come and set this city on fire. They will burn it, including the houses where incense has been burned to Baal on their rooftops and where drink offerings have been poured out to other gods to anger me. 30From their youth, the Israelites and Judeans have done nothing but what is evil in my sight! They have done nothing but anger me by the work of their hands” — this is the Lord’s declaration — “for this city has caused my wrath and fury from the day it was built until now. I will therefore remove it from my presence 32because of all the evil the Israelites and Judeans have done to anger me — they, their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets, the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem. 33They have turned their backs to me and not their faces. Though I taught them time and time again, they do not listen and receive discipline.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-44Verses 26-44 God's answer discovers the purposes of his wrath against that generation of the Jews, and the purposes of his grace concerning future generations. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31This city was built during the reigns of David and Solomon, when Jerusalem became Israel's capital. In the northern kingdom of Israel, every king promoted the worship of false gods. In Judah, only a few kings encouraged worship of the Lord, but their efforts usually did not last (e.g., 2 Chronicles 14:3; 17:6; 29:5; 33:15–16; 34:3, 31–32). The northern kingdom was already destroyed (2 Kings 17:5–12), and now the Lord decided to remove the southern kingdom…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3131. provocation of mine anger--literally, "for mine anger." Calvin, therefore, connects these words with those at the end of the verse, "this city has been to me an object for mine anger (namely, by reason of the provocations mentioned, Jr 32:30, &c.), that I should remove it," &c. Thus, there will not be the repetition of the sentiment, Jr 32:30, as in English Version; the Hebrew also favors this rendering. However, Jeremiah delights in repetitions. In…Read the comment
