Context of Genesis 9:18
16And whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of every kind that is on the earth.” 17So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between Me and every creature on the earth.” The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And Ham was the father of Canaan. 19These three were the sons of Noah, and from them the whole earth was populated. 20Now Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-23Verses 18-23 The drunkenness of Noah is recorded in the Bible, with that fairness which is found only in the Scripture, as a case and proof of human weakness and imperfection, even though he may have been surprised into the sin; and to show that the best of men cannot stand upright, unless they depend upon Divine grace, and are upheld thereby. Ham appears to have been a bad man, and probably rejoiced to find his father in an unbecoming situation. It was…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18Ham was the father of Canaan: See also 9:20–27; 10:6–20. The text repeats this idea to show a connection between Canaan and Ham. Because of this, the identity of the Canaanites is closely tied to that event. The people of Egypt (where Israel lived as slaves) and the people of Canaan (the land Israel…Read the comment
