Context of Ezekiel 20:45

43There you will remember your ways and all the deeds with which you have defiled yourselves, and you will loathe yourselves for all the evils you have done. 44Then you will know, O house of Israel, that I am the LORD, when I have dealt with you for the sake of My name and not according to your wicked ways and corrupt acts, declares the Lord GOD.” Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 46“Son of man, set your face toward the south, preach against it, and prophesy against the forest of the Negev. 47Say to the forest of the Negev: Hear the word of the LORD! This is what the Lord GOD says: I am about to ignite in you a fire, and it will devour all your trees, both green and dry. The blazing flame will not be quenched, and by it every face from south to north will be scorched.

The variety of terms helps the force of the application. Chebar is in the north of Babylonia; from the north the Chaldaeans came upon…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 45-49Verses 45-49 Judah and Jerusalem had been full of people, as a forest of trees, but empty of fruit. God's word prophesies against those who bring not forth the fruits of righteousness. When He will ruin a nation, who or what can save it? The plainest truths were as parables to the people. It is common for those who will not be wrought upon by the word, to blame it.Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 45-49Like a parable, this prophecy both reveals and conceals its message. People complain that the prophet only speaks in riddles (see Matthew 13:10–17). It reveals that a powerful judgment is coming. This judgment is described as an all-consuming fire. That means it is like a fire that burns up every tree.Read the comment
