Context of Esther 9:12
10the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy, slew they; but on the spoil they laid not their hand. 11On that day the number of those that were slain in Shushan the palace was brought before the king. And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done. 13Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews that are in Shushan to do to-morrow also according unto this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged upon the gallows. 14And the king commanded it so to be done: and a decree was given out in Shushan; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12If the king had been upset by the high numbers, he would not have allowed more fighting (Esther 9:14–15). It is more likely that the king was surprised by how many people supported Haman and opposed Mordecai's new leadership. He was concerned about the empire's political stability.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5-165-16. Thus the Jews smote all their enemies--The effect of the two antagonistic decrees was, in the meantime, to raise a fierce and bloody war between the Jews and their enemies throughout the Persian empire; but through the dread of Esther and Mordecai, the provincial governors universally favored their cause, so that their enemies fell in great numbers.Read the comment
