Context of Leviticus 17:3
1Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Speak to Aaron and his sons and all the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord has commanded, saying, “Any man from the house of Israel who kills an ox or lamb or goat in the camp, or kills it outside the camp 4and has not brought it to the doorway of the Tent of Meeting to offer it as an offering to the Lord before the tabernacle of the Lord, that man shall be guilty of bloodshed. He has shed blood and shall be cut off from his people [excluding him from the atonement made for them]. 5This is so that the sons of Israel may bring their sacrifices which they were sacrificing [to idols] in the open field [where they killed them], that they may bring them in to the Lord, at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting to the priest, and sacrifice them as sacrifices of peace offerings to the Lord.

Commentaries on Leviticus 17:3
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3-7Verses 3-7 Every domesticated animal that was slain for food was a sort of peace-offering Leviticus 17:5. This law could only be kept as long as the children of Israel dwelt in their camp in the wilderness. The restriction was removed before they settled in the holy land, where their numbers and diffusion over the country would have rendered its strict observance impossible. See Deuteronomy 12:15-16, Deuteronomy 12:20-24. Leviticus 17:4 Blood shall be…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-9These rules show that unsupervised sacrifices could lead a mixture of pagan practices with true worship of the Lord (see also Deuteronomy 12:15–21; Leviticus 17:7). Israel camped around the Tent of Meeting so it was easy to bring an animal to the sanctuary for slaughter (see also Deuteronomy 12:15–21). Deuteronomy 12:20–24 anticipates Israel settling in the land and the challenges of this rule. It allowed slaughtering and eating meat without bringing it…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-163-4. What man ... killeth an ox--The Israelites, like other people living in the desert, would not make much use of animal food; and when they did kill a lamb or a kid for food, it would almost always be, as in Abraham's entertainment of the angels [Ge 18:7], an occasion of a feast, to be eaten in company. This was what was done with the peace offerings, and accordingly it is here enacted, that the same course shall be followed in slaughtering the animals…Read the comment
