Context of Deuteronomy 32:2
1“Listen, O heavens, and I will speak; And let the earth hear the words of my mouth. Let my teaching drop as the rain, My speech distill as the dew, As the light rain upon the tender grass, And as the spring showers upon the herb. 3For I proclaim the name [and presence] of the Lord; Ascribe greatness and honor to our God! 4The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness without iniquity (injustice), Just and upright is He.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2My doctrine - לקחי likchi, from לקח lakach, to take, carry away; to attract or gain over the heart by eloquence or persuasive speech. Hence the Septuagint translate the word , an apophthegm, a sententious and weighty saying, for the regulation of the moral conduct such, properly, are the sayings in this inimitable ode. Shall drop as the rain - It shall come drop by drop as the shower, beginning slowly and distinctly, but increasing more and more till the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-42Verses 1-42 Song of Moses If Deuteronomy 32:1-3 be regarded as the introduction, and Deuteronomy 32:43 as the conclusion, the main contents of the song may be grouped under three heads, namely, (1) Deuteronomy 32:4-18, the faithfulness of God, the faithlessness of Israel; (2) Deuteronomy 32:19-33, the chastisement and the need of its infliction by God; (3) Deuteronomy 32:34-42, God‘s compassion upon the low and humbled state of His people. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2like rain … like dew: This comparison shows how gentle and life-giving the teaching of Moses should be. Rain and dew softly water the ground and help plants grow. In the same way, the words of Moses should refresh God’s people. His teaching should help obedience grow in their hearts.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2-32-3. My doctrine shall drop, &c.--The language may justly be taken as uttered in the form of a wish or prayer, and the comparison of wholesome instruction to the pure, gentle, and insinuating influence of rain or dew, is frequently made by the sacred writers (Is 5:6; 55:10, 11).Read the comment
