Context of 2 Samuel 21:8
6let seven men [chosen] from his sons (descendants) be given to us and we will hang them before the Lord [that is, put them on display, impaled with broken legs and arms] in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen one of the Lord.” And the king said, “I will give them.” 7But the king spared Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the Lord’s oath that was between David and Saul’s son Jonathan. So the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bore to Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth, and the five sons of Merab the daughter of Saul, whom she had borne to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite. 9He handed them over to the Gibeonites, and they hanged them on the hill before the Lord, and the seven died together. They were put to death in the first days of the grain harvest, the beginning of the barley harvest [in the spring]. 10Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it out for herself on the rock, from the beginning of harvest [in the spring] until [the autumn] rain fell on them; and she allowed neither the birds of the sky to rest on their bodies by day, nor the beasts of the field [to feed on them] by night.

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 21:8
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Five sons of Michal - whom she brought up - Michal, Saul's daughter, was never married to Adriel, but to David, and afterwards to Phaltiel; though it is here said she bore ילדה yaledah, not brought up, as we falsely translate it: but we learn from 1 Samuel 18:19, that Merab, one of Saul's daughters, was married to Adriel. Two of Dr. Kennicott's MSS. have Merab, not Michal; the Syriac and Arabic have Nadab; the Chaldee has properly Merab; but it renders…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8Rizpah - See the marginal reference. A foreign origin was possibly the cause of the selection of Rizpah‘s sons as victims. Sons of Michal - An obvious error for “Merab” (1 Samuel 18:19 note).Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8Armoni and Mephibosheth were Saul’s only two remaining sons. Merab daughter of Saul: Ancient manuscripts differ on the name of Saul’s daughter. The Hebrew text names Michal, but the Greek text names Merab. Many translations, including the Berean Standard Bible, follow the Greek reading. This is because Michal remained childless for the rest of her life (2 Samuel 6:22–23). Merab, not Michal, was married to Adriel (1 Samuel 18:19). Michal’s later husband…Read the comment
