Context of 1 Kings 11:42
40So Solomon attempted to kill Jeroboam; but Jeroboam set out and escaped to Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, and stayed in Egypt until Solomon died. 41The rest of the acts of Solomon—and all that he did, and his wisdom—are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon? The time Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. 43And Solomon slept [in death] with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David. Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 11:42
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 42Solomon reigned - forty years - Josephus says fourscore years, which is sufficiently absurd. Calmet supposes him to have been eighteen years old when he came to the throne, and that he died A.M. 3029, aged fifty-eight years; and, when we consider the excess in which he lived, and the criminal passions which he must have indulged among his thousand wives, and their idolatrous and impure worship, this life was as long as could be reasonably expected.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 41-43Verses 41-43 Solomon's reign was as long as his father's, but his life was not so. Sin shortened his days. If the world, with all its advantages, could satisfy the soul, and afford real joy, Solomon would have found it so. But he was disappointed in all, and to warn us, has left this record of all earthly enjoyments, "Vanity and vexation of spirit." The New Testament declares that one greater than Solomon is come to reign over us, and to possess the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 41-43The brief summary of Solomon’s reign and death is similar to that of his father David (1 Kings 2:10–12). These summaries follow a typical pattern for the accounts of later kings. The Book of the Acts of Solomon was probably kept in a prophetic center or in palace and Temple archives. It provided information for the author of Kings but is now lost (compare 1 Kings 14:19, 29). Solomon ruled from 971 to 931 BC.Read the comment
