In detail

The Counter—Reformation was a Catholic response to the Protestant Reformation. It began with the Council of Trent (1545—1563) and ended with the Treaty of Westphalia, which effectively ended the Thirty Years' War.

The Counter—Reformation is illustrated best by the ecclesiastical reforms of the Council of Trent, the revival of the Inquisition, the appearance of the Index of Prohibited Books, and the work of the Jesuits.
