In detail

Emperor Constantine the Great had a powerful experience at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312A.D. Before battle commenced, he is said to have looked toward the sun and seen a cross made of light above it, along with words in Greek meaning "By this, win!" He subsequently ordered his troops to place the Christian symbol Chi—Rho on their shields, and the army went on to victory.
