The long-suffering of God is wonderful. Long does justice wait while mercy pleads with the sinner. But “righteousness and judgment are the establishment of His throne.” Psalm 97:2, margin. “The Lord is slow to anger;” but He is “great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the Lord hath His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet.” Nahum 1:3.Testimony Treasures, vol. 2

The apostle Paul exclaims: “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out!” Romans 11:33. But though “clouds and darkness are round about Him: righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.” Psalm 97:2, R.V. We can so far comprehend His dealing with us, and the motives by which He is actuated, that we may discern boundless love and mercy united to infinite power. We can understand as much of His purpose as it is for our good to know; and beyond this we must still trust the might of the Omnipotent, the love and wisdom of the Father and Sovereign of all.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

Oh, the worth of the soul! It cannot be estimated by you, Arthur and Rosetta, because you have not cultivated a sense of the great sacrifice made by the Son of God to save the soul from eternal ruin. You do not realize the abhorrence which the Lord has for sin. The prophet says, “I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. ... And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” [Revelation 20:12, 15.] “Righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.” [Psalm 97:2.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

All who desire to be among the number who will stand before God without fault must begin without delay the practical work of overcoming. The Lord permits trials to come in order that we may be cleansed from earthliness, from selfishness, from harsh unchristlikeness of character. He desires to create in every heart a deep and earnest longing to be cleansed from every stain of sin, that we may come forth purer, holier, and happier from every trial which He permits. Our souls become darkened by selfishness, but if we can only see Jesus, there will be a dying to self. Changes will be made in word and action. If we are patient under the crucial test, we shall come forth reflecting the image of the Master. “He shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light and thy judgment as the noonday.” [Psalm 37:6.] “Righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.” [Psalm 97:2.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

Chapter 18—Mysteries of the Bible
Ed 169.1
No finite mind can fully comprehend the character or the works of the Infinite One. We cannot by searching find out God. To minds the strongest and most highly cultured, as well as to the weakest and most ignorant, that holy Being must remain clothed in mystery. But though “clouds and darkness are round about Him: righteousness and judgment are the foundation of His throne.” Psalm 97:2, R.V. We can so far comprehend His dealing with us as to discern boundless mercy united to infinite power. The long-suffering of God is wonderful. Long does justice wait while mercy pleads with the sinner. But “righteousness and judgment are the establishment of his throne” (Psalm 97:2, margin).... The world has become bold in transgression of God’s law. Because of His long forbearance, men have trampled upon His authority.... But there is a line beyond which they cannot pass. The time is near when they will have reached the prescribed limit. Even now they have almost exceeded the bounds of the long-suffering of God, the limits of His grace, the limits of His mercy. The Lord will interpose to vindicate His own honor, to deliver His people, and to repress the swellings of unrighteousness....Manuscript Releases, vol. 9 [Nos. 664-770]

PP 43.1
He that ruleth in the heavens is the one who sees the end from the beginning—the one before whom the mysteries of the past and the future are alike outspread, and who, beyond the woe and darkness and ruin that sin has wrought, beholds the accomplishment of His own purposes of love and blessing. Though “clouds and darkness are round about Him: righteousness and judgment are the foundation of His throne.” Psalm 97:2, R.V. Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart. Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.” Psalm 97:10-12. Teachers, ministers, and physicians are talking of higher ground to be gained in educational lines; but these words of the psalmist show that it is by serving God that this higher ground will be gained. We should now be putting away evilspeaking, selfish plans, everything that would hurt the influence or confuse the judgment. Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart. Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.” [Psalm 97:10-12.] Teachers, ministers, and physicians are talking of a higher ground to be gained in educational lines; but the words of the psalmist show that every soul should now be seeking for higher ground in serving the Lord. We should not be putting away all evil speaking, all selfish plans, all speech that would hurt the influence or confuse the judgment of others. Our words are to be such that they will not leave impressions upon the mind contrary to that which should be received. My brethren, let your hearts be emptied of all self-seeking; let evil speaking be put away, and let the conduct be such that you will lead no soul to make false moves. Let there be a sensible understanding of the times in which we live; let it be realized that the end of all things is near, and that our work of character building is soon to bear the test of the investigative judgment.Psalms 97:11

Some Willfully Pervert God’s Word
DD 7.5
The Bible was designed to be a guide to all who wish to become acquainted with the will of their Maker. God gave to men the sure word of prophecy; angels and even Christ Himself came to make known to Daniel and John the things that must shortly come to pass. Those important matters that concern our salvation were not left involved in mystery. They were not revealed in such a way as to perplex and mislead the honest seeker after truth. Said the Lord by the prophet Habakkuk: “Write the vision, and make it plain, ... that he may run that readeth it.” Habakkuk 2:2. The word of God is plain to all who study it with a prayerful heart. Every truly honest soul will come to the light of truth. “Light is sown for the righteous.” Psalm 97:11. Chapter 10—Later Reformers
4SP 185.2
The course of the Presbyterian synod in condemning Eld. Morton without granting him a hearing, is an evidence of the spirit of intolerance which still exists, even among those claiming to be Protestant reformers. The infinite God, whose throne is in the heavens, condescends to address his people, “Come now, and let us reason together;” [Isaiah 1:18.] but frail, erring men proudly refuse to reason with their brethren. They stand ready to censure one who accepts any light which they have not received—as though God had pledged himself to give no more light to any one than he had given to them. This is the course pursued by opposers of the truth in every age. They forget the declaration of the Scriptures, “Light is sown for the righteous.” [Psalm 97:11.] “The path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” [Proverbs 4:18.] It is a sad thing when a people claiming to be reformers cease to reform. The Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4

My guide then had many things to say which left an indelible impression upon my mind. His words were solemn and earnest. He opened before me the condition of the church at Battle Creek. I can only give here a meager portion of what was said to me. He stated that the church needed the “energy of Christ,” that all must cling close to the Bible, for it alone can give a correct knowledge of God’s will. A time of trial was before us, and great evils would be the result of the Pharisaism which has in a large degree taken possession of those who occupy important positions in the work of God. He said that the work of Christ upon the earth was to undo the heavy burdens and let the oppressed go free, to break every yoke, and [that] the work of His people must correspond with the work of Christ. We have our own individuality, and must work in our own armor. But at the same time we must be very careful that we do not cherish the idea that we cannot make any improvement in our manner of labor, and resent suggestions that may be made to us as to improving our ways and manner of labor. Let no worker entertain the thought that because the Lord counsels him through another worker, pointing out more successful methods of labor than his own, that he is not appreciated, and that he must labor by himself, in order to carry out his own ways. I wanted to add one more text to your letter. It was this: “Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always wroth; for the spirit should fall before me, and the souls which I have made. ... I have seen his ways, and will heal him; I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.” [Isaiah 57:15, 16, 18.] Are not these words full of encouragement? God assures us that He will not leave us to walk in the sparks of our own kindling, to grope our way along in uncertainty. He will not leave us to be our own teachers in the serious, all-important matters that concern our eternal interests. He declares, “I will be your Teacher. And no church can advance in holiness unless its members are earnestly seeking for truth as for hid treasure. The Great Controversy (1888 ed.)

Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness. Psalm 97:12.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

The Lord will surely humble those who uplift themselves. Men are not safe unless they are clothed with the garments of Christ’s righteousness. A holy joy, a sanctified experience it is our privilege to have. The apostle Paul points us to the true source of peace and joy and victory. He says, “Rejoice in the Lord.” [Philippians 3:1; 4:4.] There is to be no ambitious exalting of self. “Without Me ye can do nothing,” Christ declares. [John 15:5.] Then give all the glory to God. “Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.” [Psalm 97:12.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

Christ clothed His divinity with humanity to make it possible for human beings to be partakers of the divine nature, overcoming the corruption that is in the world through lust. What is the result when the repentant sinner sees the privilege that is his in being enabled to unite with Christ? He is filled with thankfulness and rejoicing. “Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous, and give praise at the remembrance of His holiness.” [Psalm 97:12.] And as long as man keeps humble and lowly, God blesses him. But when he gives place to self-exaltation, he ceases to depend on Him who is the source of mercy and peace and love. Self-sufficiency clothes him, and he puts himself in high places.EGW Writings — Ellen G. White. Ellen G. White Estate · all rights reserved

The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof. Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne. Psalm 97:1, 2.
