Praise ye the Lord: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely. Psalm 147:1.

I opened the Bible to search for some passage and read these words: “Praise ye the Lord; for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant, and praise is comely. The Lord doth build up Jerusalem: He gathereth together the outcasts of Israel. He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” [Psalm 147:1-3.]

19LtMs, Lt 225, 1904, par. 5

“He telleth the number of the stars; He calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord, and of great power; His understanding is infinite. The Lord lifteth up the meek; He casteth the wicked down to the ground. Sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God; who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains. He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry. He delighteth not in the strength of the horse; He taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man. The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear Him, in those that hope in His mercy. Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem; praise thy God, O Zion.” [Verses 4-12.]

Psalms 147:1-20

The Psalmist writes, “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” [Psalm 147:3.] Though He is the restorer of fallen humanity, yet “he telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord and of great power: his understanding is infinite. The Lord lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground. Sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God ... The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy. Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem: praise thy God, O Zion.” How precious are the lessons of this Psalm. We might well devote study to the last four Psalms of David.

Satan will manufacture his diversions that men may not think about God. The world, filled with sport and pleasure-loving, is always thirsting for some new interests. And how little time and thought are given to the Creator of the heavens and the earth. God calls upon His creatures to turn their attention from the confusion and perplexity around them, and admire His handiwork. The heavenly bodies are worthy of contemplation. God has made them for the benefit of man, and as we study His works, angels of God will be by our side to enlighten our minds and guard them from satanic deception. As you look at the wonderful things God’s hand has made, let your proud, foolish heart feel its dependence and inferiority. As you consider these things, you will have a sense of God’s condescension. To Sustain the Burden Bearer, April 18

AG 116.4

Keep your wants, your joys, your sorrows, your cares, and your fears, before God. You cannot burden Him; you cannot weary Him. He who numbers the hairs of your head is not indifferent to the wants of His children.... Take to Him everything that perplexes the mind. Nothing is too great for Him to bear, for He holds up worlds, He rules over all the affairs of the universe. Nothing that in any way concerns our peace is too small for Him to notice. There is no chapter in our experience too dark for Him to read; there is no perplexity too difficult for Him to unravel. No calamity can befall the least of His children, no anxiety harass the soul, no joy cheer, no sincere prayer escape the lips, of which our heavenly Father is unobservant, or in which He takes no immediate interest. “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). The relations between God and each soul are as distinct and full as though there were not another soul upon earth to share His watchcare, not another soul for whom He gave His beloved Son.55Steps to Christ, 100.

Elder Olsen, of necessity you have many burdens to bear; but do not gather burdens and become crushed under them. The Lord does not mean to press weights on any one to crush out his life and forever stop his bearing any burdens. Our loving heavenly Father says to every one of His workers, “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee.” [Psalm 55:22.] Again comes the injunction, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” [1 Peter 5:7.] The Lord estimates every weight before He allows it to rest upon the heart of those who are laborers together with Him. Jesus has borne sorrows and burdens, and He knows just what they are. He has His eye upon every laborer. The Lord telleth the number of the stars, and yet “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” [Psalm 147:3.] The Lord invites you to roll your burden on Him for He carries you on His heart.

All His work is of a character that is not discernible; all things spiritual or material stood up before the Lord God at His word and were created at His pleasure, “the heavens ... and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth” (Psalm 33:6). “I,” said the Lord, “have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all the host have I commanded” (Isaiah 45:12). God made the world; He was not dependent upon pre-existent matter. “I,” saith the Lord, “have made the earth, and created man upon it.” He is Himself the great and constant worker. He watereth the earth and blesseth the increase on it; He “covereth the heaven with clouds,” and “prepareth rain for the earth. ... He giveth snow like wool: and scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes” (Psalm 147:8, 16). “He divideth the sea with his power” “and laith up the depths in storehouses” (Job 26:12; Psalm 33:7). Fire and hail, storm and tempest fulfill His word.

Chapter 42—The Revelation of God

1SM 294.1

There is scarcely an operation of nature to which we may not find reference in the Word of God. The Word declares that “he maketh his sun to rise,” and the rain to descend (Matthew 5:45). He “maketh grass to grow upon the mountains.” “He giveth snow like wool: he scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes. He casteth forth his ice like morsels.... He sendeth out his word, and melteth them: he causeth his wind to blow, and the waters flow” (Psalm 147:8, 16-18). “He maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries” (Psalm 135:7).

God has special regard for righteousness of character. In his word we are told that “he delighteth not in the strength of the horse; he taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man. The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in them that hope in his mercy.” [Psalm 147:10, 11.] He calls on the earth to fear him, and commands all the inhabitants of the world to stand in awe of him, and yet he invites the most simple to seek him, “if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us.” [Acts 17:27.]

“The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in them that hope in his mercy.” Psalm 147:11. But it is only through the value of the sacrifice made for us that we are of value in the Lord’s sight. It is because of the imputed righteousness of Christ that we are counted precious by God. For Christ’s sake He pardons them that fear Him. He does not see in them the vileness of the sinner; He recognizes in them the likeness of His Son, in whom they believe. In this way only can God take pleasure in any of us. “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” John 1:12.

It is God that causes the sun to rise in the heavens. He opens the windows of heaven and gives rain. He causes the grass to grow upon the mountains. “He giveth snow like wool: He scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes.” “When He uttereth His voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens; ...He maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of His treasures.” Psalm 147:16; Jeremiah 10:13.

In God we live and move and have our being. Every breath, every throb of the heart, is the continual evidence of the power of an ever-present God. It is God that maketh the sun to rise in the heavens. He openeth the windows of heaven and giveth rain. He maketh the grass to grow upon the mountains. “He giveth snow like wool; and scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes.” [Psalm 147:16.]
